Late in the summer I started another rewatch of BtVS (it’s gotta be my all time favorite show) and I noticed that I can blow through the first four seasons at a rapid pace, but by the time five hits (we just got to S6 tonight) I slow down.
Part of it might be almost every episode of S3 is a banger, and I love S4 more than most. However, I think it’s that the last 3 seasons get heavy in a way that makes it hard if not impossible to watch more than 2 at a time. It’s definitely not a dip in quality-S5 is nearly as great as 3, and S6 only improves with each rewatch. For me, Buffy mostly skipping the college experience and working through adulthood in such a condensed time (losing a parent, essentially becoming a parent, struggling financially, toxic relationships, SA, for starters) is a whirlwind.
Anyone else experience something similar?
Yes.
Personally, I don't think there is a bad season. Even the "weaker" BtVs episodes are better than every episode of every other show.
But yeah, when it hits season 5 the show does begin to slow down. The reason for that is because seasons 1-3 are relatively light and fun. Season 4 is more serious, and seasons 5-7 are really serious.
That's the genius of the show. Each season is set at a tone that's set by life:
Seasons 1-3 - Buffy is in school, so it's light and fun and generally carefree.
Season 4 - Season 4 Is a transitional season. Buffy leaves school and all-of-a-sudden the show becomes a little more grown up. Not overly grown up, though.
Season 5-7: Season 5 is another transitional season. Buffy has to get a job, etc. The lives of the characters because grown up and complex.
