So, I'm of the opinion (as many other Bills fans seem to be) that, if the opportunity to draft Matt Araiza at a reasonable spot in the draft ("reasonable" being defined differently by most) presents itself, the Bills should do so.
My only issue would be, can he hold for FG/PATs? Others have asked it, but I've seen no concrete evidence that he has done it. Some may say "It can be taught," "How hard can it be?" etc. Unfortunately, Bojorquez doesn't seem to be so great at it, which may have been why the Bills moved on from him and why Mason Crosby in GB had his lowest FG percentage in a decade and second lowest in his career. While I think most would agree that an upgrade from Haack at punter would be welcomed, he seems to have zero issues holding for FG and PATs.
Hopefully, if the Bills draft Araiza (or any punter, for that matter) they can also double as the holder (or find someone who can hold) and Bass won't miss a beat. But, in a worst-case scenario, where the drafted punter doesn't gel with Bass holding-wise, for whatever reason and the Bills can't find anyone else that does, how would people feel about keeping both the drafted punter AND Haack on the roster?
I know many will think it's crazy, but again, I'm thinking worst-case scenario here. Bass would kick, obviously, the punter would punt and the Bills would pay Haack $1.135M to be a holder. Again, I get it, not the ideal situation. One advantage of doing this would be, if Bass gets hurt, Araiza has also kicked FGs, so he could kick and punt in a pinch. Also, if Araiza got hurt, we'd still have Haack to punt, with the benefit of not having to find another holder for Bass on kicks.
Again, 99% of the time, this probably isn't even a discussion. But, in a season where the Bills are competing for a championship, the difference between making or missing a FG or PAT due to a bad hold could make the difference, as could a shanked punt at a crucial moment in a game. For those reasons, I can't say I'm entirely against the idea of using one spot on the roster for this type of insurance.
