Tips for training 2 Budgies? (Pics of Cage and them included)
Post Body

Here are my budgies in their cage. They are Sprinkles (blue boy) and Sarah (yellow/green girl). (If pictures aren't clear, I can take some better ones later if needed)

Notes about them:

  • We got Sprinkles back in April this year from PetCo (he originally came with a brother, but that guy flew away so...)
  • We got Sarah back in August from PetCo (after Sprinkles' brother flew away)
  • We like to put the cage outside for a bit everyday (when it's not too hot or too cold. Just right) and they seem to be more active then. We watch them carefully, and the backyard is closed off so they are safe
  • Sarah likes to run back and forth between the 2 mirrors
  • Sprinkles goes everywhere, but he does like the rope (connects middle and top perch) a lot and the rope rings (right side)
  • Sprinkles also likes the swing, but Sarah will jump on and off immediately
  • Currently they do not eat human food (we try a couple times a week and still nothing)
  • That stick in the middle-back of the cage is food
  • They havent had millet yet (I recently bought some for hopes for training them)
  • Usually when they see me eat, they like to go eat at the same time
  • If Sarah gets scared she immediately flies to Sprinkles
  • We are going to be moving soon (they are coming with us, duh)

So some questions I have:

1.) Tips for training 2 Parakeets? I have slightly started and I do not mind it will take a while. Should I try to separate them before training (we have a "moving" cage for when they need to go places in the car with us) so its easier?

1a.) I am pretty sure they are afraid of hands. I was thinking that after they completely finish eating that current stick of food in the cage I would clean it really well and then use that for training instead of my hand so they are comfortable.

1b.) Since we are moving, should I wait a couple days or so after the move to train them so they are comfortable?

1c.) Also the training might not be held in the room they will normally be kept (normally would be in the living room, but I was thinking of allowing them out in my room which is smaller during training). Should I bring the cage in their beforehand and let them learn the room before I start training or is there something else?

2.) Tips for eating people food? I'm thinking of cutting it up really small and mixing it in with their regular food. I was also thinking of starting with corn and carrots and apples.

And in general if you guys have any comments or questions for me please let me know! Thanks!
