And they are going for the throat this time - to destroy the meaning of the name Bitcoin.
According to information printed on some websites, the "Bitcoin" Diamond fork increases the number of issued coins times ten to 210 million.
You might think this is just a simple scaling of all economic parameters by 10 - but there no public source code for Diamond to verify at this time.
Furthermore, at least one website has announced that the remaining 40M coins will be allocated to a "community rewards pool and mining" - whatever that is supposed to mean. If they are not simply mined, then there would be no need for such a phrase.
The effect of the tenfolding of the number of coins will be that "Bitcoin Diamond" reaches a market cap 10 times higher than it would otherwise.
I'm actually surprised that they didn't use a factor of 10,000 so that they might come out at #1 right away, but maybe that would make it too obvious and simply get their coin delisted.
Regardless of what happens then, they put the Bitcoin name into disrepute (even more than BTG with its scam wallets and attempts to include hidden fees in software distributed by its developers).
It should be a disgrace for a spin-off to hide its source code until after it has forked.
Reputable exchanges should refuse to list coins which do not publish their source code and hide from security audits.
I've seen one particularly demented person on /r/Bitcoin even trumpet "security through obscurity" as if that does not go contra to all established best practice.
Please join in calling out those players that don't follow the simple transparency rules that protect users from harm.
EDIT: As it's been pointed out to me that Bitcoin Diamond's x 10 coin limit just means its price will be slashed by a factor of 10, my response: If there was no strong effect to be gained from gaming the number of coins, why do you think they're planning to do it? Funny how the rationale for it is missing...
At this stage we'll have to wait and see what happens. Maybe the Diamond fork won't even materialize properly as per announcements, like some people have said. Then again, there are four forks each calling themselves "Diamond" and the public has not seen one block.
Fortunately, Trezor, Ledger, and others are calling this fork out on its lack of code and blockchain.
