Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out info about my grandfather's movements in the D-Day landings?

Post Body

TL;DR - my Nana has not been given long to live by doctors. Before she passes away she'd love to know which beach my grandfather landed on in the D-Day landings.

To expand on the above, my Nana is 96 and last week she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, which came as a shock to the whole family. She hasn't been given an estimate of how long she has left but it's not a great deal of time. A couple of years ago she expressed to me an interest in finding out more about where my late grandfather landed in Normandy on D-Day. I'd like to do everything I can to fulfil her wish before she passes away.

My grandfather was always very quiet and reserved gentleman who never liked to talk about his experiences of the war. He was a sapper in the Royal Engineers and I found the subject fascinating when I was a child but I got very little info from him. Whilst I regret not finding out more before he passed away in 2002, I cringe when I look back at the questions I asked because I realise I was inadvertently reminding him of some memories I'm sure he wished to suppress. My father tells me it was the same when he was growing up and it likely relates to his personal experiences of the Normandy landing. One of the few things we know is that after he disembarked the landing craft and made his was ashore, he was caught in an explosion and buried alive for a period of time. I can't begin to imagine what other things he witnessed.

I have his name, DOB, military personnel number and regiment and wondered whether there is any organisation that would know from this info where he is likely to have landed (My dad thinks it was Gold or Sword beach based on a half remembered conversation from the 1960s)? I don't know whether there might be some sort of regimental records office or museum that would know or perhaps some central place to submit this sort of enquiry?

It would mean a huge amount to me be able to confirm this. Does anyone in this sub have any idea where I might be best to start with such an enquiry?
