Should I listen to my parents and not buy a motorbike for Brisbane commuting/weekend riding?

Love to have a motorbike and I’ve been doing motocross since I was 12; so I’d say I have a lot of bike experience. Granted I know it’s totally different being on the road, surrounded by people in cars and other hazards.
Just like to hear other people’s thoughts if the fun is worth the risk.
