is it weird to call bus drivers 'sir'

i noticed that when i say 'thank you sir' when i get off the bus or after they answer my questions about something some drivers laugh and one also gave me a funny look
where i came from it's polite to use honorifics for ppl you don't know, especially if it's like old men lol
i'm just curious, is it too formal for australia?
