Many years ago I was playing in the semi-finals of our national pairs championship.
The semi-final was held in the capital of my country (Greece). The level of the competition was quite high as there was already a preliminary round. However there were participating some qualified pairs from other small towns where level of bridge was in general weaker.
At some point we sit to play against one of these weaker pairs. Not vul against vul. my partner opens 2S weak, next opponent doubles and I have a decent spade fit and very few high card points. Although I could preempt with 3 Spades I chose (probably wrongly) to pass, in order to not let the opponents estimate better their mutual spades length.
To my surprise the other opponents passes the double as well. I was already sure that we were heading towards a good score since they seem to have an almost certain vulnerable game and we couldn't go down more than 3 tricks.
It turns out that after 2-3 serious defensive errors my partner even manages to make 2 Spades doubled and they had a slam in 6 Hearts. You see the partner of doubler had hearts plus a lot of high card points and passed hoping for a huge penalty based on the high card points.
The opponent took out the scorecard and entered "2 spades: 110". My partner said "You know it was doubled, it is 470" with opponent replying: "No no, it was not a penalty double, it was a take out!"
Now this could be the end of the story but my partner made it even better. Noticing that 110 was exactly the same absolute top score like 470, said to the guy: "Oh okey didn't notice that, 110 it is"
You see my partner was and still is a very big troll and was very amused by the imaginary situation of these guys back in their small town trying to explain that "if the double is for take out then a made contract scores normally. we even had an incident of it in the national championship!"
well this was a first story and i hope you didnt fount it dickish on behalf of my partner :)
