As I approach my 5th round of chemo and schedule my DMX, it's hard not to think about whether I could've caught this earlier if I'd known to look and what circumstances and Drs allowed me to find it AT ALL. I have talked to a ton of people at this point who had a lump, went to their Dr, and were denied imagining because they were "too young" to have cancer or the lump didn't "look like" cancer, etc...only for it to in fact be invasive in the end. I'm wondering just how prevalent that is in this community? How hard did you have to self-advocate to get screened or get taken seriously?
In my case, 38F, my OB ordered me a mammogram before I even had a lump b/c she was being "overly cautious" when I told her my boobs hurt. And thank god she did because shortly thereafter a lump DID appear. But when I got the ultrasound, I was told it didn't look like cancer and likely wasn't, esp as I had no other risk factors. They asked if I wanted a biopsy for peace of mind. I shudder to think that I could've just as easily said, "no, it's okay," and left.
My story is similar! My PCP felt a lump in May of 2023 and just to be âextra cautiousâ she ordered an ultrasound. I was 30 at the time and she said she suspected it was a cyst. I get the ultrasound and was told it didnât look funky and I shouldnât worry about it but what they heckâŠweâll take another look IN 6 MONTHS đ«
So during that time, I had a second cousin get diagnosed in her early 50s. I try to call and see if I can get in sooner for the follow up ultrasound and was told it wasnât advisable. I agreed because theyâre the professionals.
Finally get the follow up in Nov 23, it hasnât grown but seemed slightly more vascularized so âjust as a precautionâ they biopsied it.
I wasnât diagnosed until Dec 23 (ILC -) and am currently recovering from a DMX (after a lumpectomy that Dec) and starting the IVF process and have chemo starting June 5th.
Big life lesson to keep pushing when advocating for yourself!

Thatâs crazy! Especially since youâve had cancer already. Iâd totally push for the biopsy in your situation. Most of the time Iâm sure theyâre right and itâs nothing to worry about, but why not at least let us definitively know! âPut your mind at easeâ as my Dr told me đ
