I just scheduled my double mastectomy. A unilateral was recommended but for symmetry purposes, peace of mind, and not wanting to travel for scans every 6 months, Iām going double.
I just turned 31 and just got married (2 weeks ago!). Iām very concerned about the physical appearance part of this, not to mention the pain and lack of sleep I know is coming. Iām planning to get reconstruction done at the same time as the mastectomy (likely expanders first).
I keep reading horror stories about drains, illnesses with implants, and lack of sleep/pain.
I need some positive stories!! If youāve have a good experience with a DMX with recon please let me know!
Any helpful tips are more than welcome too.
Other things Iām freaking out about: 1. What my breasts will look like immediately taking the bandages off (with just expanders). 2. How long Iāll need to take off work (planning for 4 weeks off followed by 2 weeks working from home) during our most busy season (I operate small boats). 3. Breast implant illness (do most women get this?! Is it more common with silicone vs saline?) 4. Feeling like there are foreign objects in my chest. (Iām super active and love to surf).
So interesting they get cold! This is the kind of inside info I was hoping to get hahaā¦although Iām a hot sleeper so that actually doesnāt sound awful to me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! And the perks are a literal perk so that is a silver lining.
Such a good idea! Thanks. Hope youāre feeling better soon!
Just followed her! Thanks!! And good luck āŗļø Mine isnāt until 4/19, just enough time to spiral into an anxious mess lol. I wish it was sooner.
Yeah I wondered about the surfing piece of itā¦laying chest down on hard fiberglass probably isnāt gonna feel great. Appreciate the feedback!
Thank you so much! Youāre so thoughtful and such a trooper for the update. I was wondering how mobile Id be immediately after so this was such a helpful comment. Glad youāre through the surgery and feeling ok ā¤ļø

This is good to hear because I think Iām just going to have to mentally prep for the drains to be miserable. And happy cancer free anniversary! Thatās so exciting!!
