My family invented this tradition years and years ago and we do it every year. It's tons of fun and makes Christmas so much more meaningful! It's such an integral part of our celebrations, I can't imagine Christmas without it.
We make up a bunch of paper slips and put them all in a Santa hat. The pieces of paper have simple tasks on them, ranging from 'offer to serve everyone drinks/food' 'sing a Christmas song' 'tell everyone your favorite Christmas memory' 'open your gift with your toes' 'open someone else' gift' 'hug the person to your right' 'skip a turn' 'make up a Christmas haiku' 'tell everyone an embarrassing moment you had this year'... you get it! It can be anything.
When it's time to open gifts, everyone has to pick a piece of paper out of the hat and complete the task before they open their gift. This makes the gift-opening go on for hours and hours and gives everyone the chance to reflect and appreciate the gift they get. It's so much more fun than just ripping open presents! We legit never skip this game, we do it every single year. It's especially great when you have kids with tons of gifts. We usually end up opening presents til mid afternoon. I hope some of you will try it because it is by far my favorite Christmas tradition.
