How to deal with nighttime fears?

Post Body

My stepdaughter is with us this summer, and understandably she sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night afraid since she's not sleeping in 'her' room and gets afraid of every little noise (cats playing, cars outside, pipes creaking). But last night she woke us up 6 times! And my god I was close to losing it at the end.

I know it's not her fault, BUT. She's almost 8. I feel like that's old enough to self-soothe to an extent. I've tried to give her all the tools I have to deal with the problem. I've bequeathed her a set of worry dolls (she still believes in their 'magic'), ambient noise, ambient lights, I've tried to explain what I did as a kid to get rid of my fears (close my eyes and envision beautiful peaceful places and make up happy stories about them, read funny books) but she still wakes us up every time she wakes up. I told her I don't care if she has to play on her tablet until she feels calm enough to sleep but please don't wake us, out of desperation. No dice.

Is there any magic tricks that have worked for your (school-age) kids to help them self-soothe when they wake up in the middle of the night?
