Do boss fights take ridiculously long for anyone else?

Just finished the fight with the time mage king and the spell fencer, and it Took me almost 20 minutes. Id like to know if maybe I wasnt using the battle system correctly or if I just plain suck at this game because for me on normal I died atleast 8 times in the clock tower place. Also if so can anyone provide any useful tips to make this game a little easier? And I dont want to change the difficulty from normal idk why but I just dont.
