I am trying to get my mind around the different states of the crystals. It seems to me that there are at least two:

1) The crystal while "infested" with some demon/dark force. The crystal is in this condition whenever, say, the player visits the crystal before awakening it. I imagine that the crystals entered this state when Airy arrived in any given world, and that the demons who infested the crystal came with Airy and poured out of the chasm.

2) The crystal while "rampaging." The crystal enters this state and after having been awakened. The crystal in this state cannot be controlled and, when all four are put in this state, they open the Holy Pillar.

Now, I am assuming that, among other things, the seas putrefied when one crystal became infested with the demon (which, in the water crystal's case, I believe, is Rusalka). My question is: was there any way other than awakening the crystal to restore the seas to their healthy condition?

The reason I ask is that it seems implausible to me that the only way to fix the oceans was to set the crystal to rampage. After all, the rampaging crystal cannot be controlled --- but what if there were simply no other way to fix things?

My question is: is there a third crystal state, one in which the crystal is neither infested with a demon nor rampaging?
