Post Body

Hey all. I woke up way too late after the data was released today and figured my analysis would get buried, so I'm doing it here instead.

Data for the two unit upgrades can be found at deathmax's blog: Link

Important Update: Drop checks fixed. 36 for Bonnie, 40 for Carrol.

Bonnie

  • Bonnie's evolution has given her a pretty hefty stat total, bringing her just shy of 3.3k ATK (and for whatever reason, over 3.3k REC...). She doesn't really have any bad stats, but if you have Anima or Guardian you can safely assume the REC penalty is never going to be a problem.
  • Bonnie's looking to be a top tier CA unit. ATK boosting ES are good for No BB rules, and elements BB ATK buff ailments is a really strong buff combination. Her LS is also effectively Haile's with no stats/HC boost.
    • She'll be less effective in regular arena and colloseum, where little of that is relevant.
    • It's worth noting here that she has excessively low drop checks on her normal attacks. No problems with her BB drop checks, however.
  • Bonnie's LS grants 50% BB fill rate and -25% BB Cost Reduction. These effects add up neatly to 100% dropped BC value and boost all other BC gen by about 33% as well. Bonnie also grants 150% BB ATK, the same as Haile does, but unfortunately there's no stats or HC drop rate here.
    • By comparison, Haile increases BC value by 157%, but only for BC drops (and a large portion of her value is by the cappable BC drop rate). Bonnie's fairly close to her but also buffs the value of BB regen, BC when attacked, instant BC fill, spark BC, etc. The tradeoff is no stats and no HC boost, which is unfortunately pretty big.
    • In essence, Bonnie's LS makes her a mini-Haile for CA. She's arguably got better buffs on her SBB for the job, too. A good backup unit.
  • Bonnie's ES is a simple 50% ATK when BB is full, 100% ATK when target has an ailment. It's a little boring, but efficient - she can inflict her own ailments at a decent rate, so it'll often be triggered in a lot of content she's likely to be used in.
  • Moving on to her skills, Bonnie's BB is a multi-element (Fire, Thunder Dark) AoE which inflicts all ailments at a 65% chance and grants Ignore DEF. It's disappointing. It's worth noting here that all of Bonnie's BB/SBB/UBB have double drop checks, however, offsetting her bad normal attack drop checks (she's an incredibly rare example of a unit with more drop checks per target on an AoE than its own normal attack)
    • You don't actually get the element buffs with this one, they're only on the SBB.
    • Ailments are good but she's no Semira.
    • DEF Ignore is... uh... well, it matters in CA sometimes. There's very little content where it's desirable, however, so it always feels like a throwaway buff, especially when you compare Bonnie to a similar unit's BB such as Semira, who has cure ailments/null ailments/75% inflict ailments - a much better package than DEF ignore/65% inflict ailments
  • Bonnie's SBB officially makes the elements a buff and trades the DEF ignore for 200% BB ATK. The ailment infliction rate is unchanged.
    • Element buffs are always good, but Bonnie's in a weird place where you can only get the rest of the elements in a single package by taking Carrol (though there's also an option in Lucina Melchio, or just accepting buff overlap). Carrol's a strong unit whose problem is that her elements only match well with Bonnie, in return...
    • Bonnie's BB ATK is... well, compared to recent units, players were beginning to expect we wouldn't see a 200% BB ATK buff on global exclusives anymore - the standard for new JP RS units is 250% from Sirius and onwards, with dream evos - sorry, omni evos - getting 300% (though Kuda, a 40 cost legacy unit, was stuck with 200%). On the other hand, this is a rare buff within the thunder element. It's been a terrible element for the buff, only having Loch and Julius until this point, and alongside her element buffs it may be enough to make Bonnie a prime pick for future Omni Eze squads and possibly for thunder FG.
    • At the very least, this SBB is great for CA.
  • Finally, we move on to Bonnie's UBB. It's an HP-scaled nuke which grants 500% BB ATK and 300% more ATK vs targets with ailments, but perhaps a little unusually for UBB with the latter effect, it doesn't inflict any ailments by itself.
    • Of course, that hurts the usefulness a fair amount, as you have to make sure the enemy has an ailment before you use the thing or it will be a lot less effective.
    • On the other hand, 800% ATK is a really hefty buff for multiplier-resistant content.... as long as ailments even work there.

Final Thoughts on Bonnie

I expressed a lot of my opinions above. I think there are several legitimate complaints with the unit:

  • Horrible drop checks on normal attacks. 18 total is horrible.
  • No HP on her LS makes it hard to use in comparison to a very similar global exclusive LS, Haile. Unlike Haile who can be used anywhere, Bonnie's pretty much only going to be used as a backup Haile in CA.
    • I think maybe it's time to realise that only nuke-type LS are really accepted without survival bonuses included. People look at a no-HP LS and say to themselves "well the effects are nice, but I really can't go without the HP in RC6/trials, and I don't need this other stuff anywhere else"
  • Extremely weak BB in comparison to similar units, including past global exclusive 7* upgrades which previously had a nearly identical BB at 6* and yet have a lower squad cost at 7*.
    • Semira's BB is almost strictly better (higher infliction chances, ailment null/cleanse is way better than DEF ignore - Bonnie's only real advantage is personal damage), yet she's a 40 cost unit released over 5 months ago.
  • Everybody was expecting more from Bonnie's SBB - it certainly feels like it's missing something.
    • Again we don't feel that 200% is the right level for BB ATK buffs after Nyami and with Sirius, Ziehl and Vargas approaching. People want to see a 250% here.
    • For that matter, the ailment infliction chances could probably do with being Semira-tier.
  • The dark element somehow puts her in a weird spot for squadbuilding where we're almost forced to either take Carrol or some form of buff clash. This is just a niggling, OCD-esque problem as Bonnie's other effects don't really clash with any element buffers.
    • Though releasing element buffers after Allanon and Zeruiah, and with Shida on the horizon, feels a little poorly timed.

Bonnie does have her good points, but until people use her they're probably only going to focus on the bad points. She'll actually be pretty great for Eze squads as BB ATK is rare in Thunder, and there are few other thunder units that give elements that won't clash with Eze in some way (well, Orna's a thing). She'll be good for Thunder FG for the same reason, and she'll be a great CA unit.

But I think people were hoping for something a little more globally viable.

Carrol

  • Behold! A unit that's extremely similar to the most recent units in her element.
    • Srsly, she shares buffs with Charla, Allanon, Reihard, Sirius, Layla and Omni Atro. Important buffs. That's going to make her hard to use despite appearances.
    • OK, maybe people won't consider her against Reihard that much, but the rest of those? They're pretty important.
  • She's got a particularly high HP and DEF, but her ATK is a little short of average for a 42 cost unit at 2.8k. It feels weird to consider 3k the average.
  • Like Bonnie, her BB/SBB kit is pretty strong for CA. Unlike Bonnie, her LS and ES aren't (well, her LS might work in emergencies with no BC Damage leads). She's still good enough as an arena sub unit for CA, but don't expect to use her in other arena modes.
    • But like Bonnie, she has horrible drop checks. 16. Really. What.
  • Carrol's LS is a bundle of BC effects, plus some HC drop rate. The total adds up to about 128% BC effectiveness, but it's also got a 33% boost to passive BC gen, and 4 BC per turn (which is automatically effectively 5.33 BC). So it's in-between Bonnie and Haile, with no damage boost in sight - instead you get a bit of HC drop rate.
    • You'll never use this outside of CA emergencies if you have Haile.
  • Carrol's ES adds status cleanse to her BB and SBB. It's good, but there's no immunity buff to go with it.
    • Oh, hi Allanon. I heard we were getting unique new light units recently.
    • Charla, Layla, my good ladies, you have another light-elemental ailment cleansing girlfriend to go shopping with. I guess Reihard would like to join you as well, but he's kinda lame so it's fine if you leave him behind.
  • Carrol's BB is a multi-element AoE (water/earth/light)that gives 130% ATK/DEF/REC and 7 BC regen. This is a pretty solid kit - in a vacuum, Carrol is a good unit at this point.
    • So let's look at who it clashes with recently! Charla is a popular unit that grants BC regen and cleanses ailments; Sirius and Atro both give triple stats with other significant buffs.
  • So her SBB surely will have effects that aren't claimed by other units! She grants water/earth/light element buffs (pretty nice), keeps her tri-stat buff (fine), gives 8% OD fill (sure) and gives 5-7 BC when attacked (always good). Again, this is a great kit, although you still have to use her BB if you want the BC regen. The elements only really mesh well with Orna and Bonnie, however.
    • Allanon, you're here again? Oh, you do elements better? And have BC when attacked as well? And OD fill?
      • Allanon and Carrol must be family. The easter bunny, kid sister of Mr. PEACE AND LOVE himself.
    • Rouche has a bone to pick with those elements as well...
    • We already know who clashes with her BB stuff, but Atro and Layla also have claims to BC when attacked. Atro even does a little OD fill rate on the side, but at least that's not a clash.
  • Finally, Carrol's UBB is a thing. It's an AoE that fills your other unit's BB gauges (just the once), refills the OD gauge by 25% and gives a Light barrier.
    • ...that's all. So basically Lucius with significantly less damage in exchange for a little OD cashback.

Final Thoughts on Carrol

Carrol is... interesting. There are 4 complaints with her:

  • Those drop checks. Why. So. Low.
  • LS has no HP, same story as Bonnie - but this time without even giving a damage advantage.
    • At this point in the game it feels way too weak - just look at Haile, then back to Carrol.
  • Her ability design is like some weird hybrid of the last 6 light units released plus Charla.
    • Light mono looks at her, says "that's a great toolkit!" and then slots Atro and Allanon instead. Other squads will probably pick Allanon/Zeruiah for elements first and then easily find replacements for the rest of her kit.
  • Her UBB just... doesn't feel good enough. Barriers are almost always weaker than UBB mitigation at this point, and it doesn't really do anything else.

She's really good if you look at her by herself, but at the same time she's really good in the wrong ways for the current and future meta. And that's really disappointing - people will look at Bonnie and say "She's bad. I don't want to use her", but slot her anyway for Eze/Thunder squads. People will look at Carrol and say "She's good. I want to use her" and then slot other element/tri-stat/BC-when-attacked buffers.

Bonnie and Carrol were originally released far too close to the arrival of 7* units, and as a result were almost never used.

Bonnie and Carrol have now been updated far too close to the arrival of Omni units, and as a result Carrol will almost never be used.

Typical.
