I'm not entirely sure how widespread Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns and Saga of Shadows are amongst Sanderson's readers, but I was struck while listening to Starsight that there were a number of really cool similarities (and some cool differences).
In brief, the Shana Rei are a race of essentially shadow creatures that exist in their own dimension outside our universe. As I recall, when seen there they manifest as giant eyes. They are a primary antagonist of the series, wishing to exterminate all sentient life in our universe because sentient thoughts create an intolerable noise in their own. When they enter our universe, they manifest as rapidly expanding, gigantic shadow clouds that consume and destroy all life on a planet, leaving it as a lifeless husk. Sounds familiar to me!
Interestingly, they are relatively OK (as far as monolithic forces of evil go) with the existence of AI, as AI thoughts apparently do not generate the painful noise, unlike (apparently) the Delvers.
I dunno, nothing terribly important to say here, other than I thought it was a cool parallel between two series of books I really enjoy! Not suggesting that Brandon based the Delvers on the Shana Rei / was influenced by them / even knows about them.
