Post Body

Welcome one and all to the latest Box Office Pro vs r/boxoffice competition! This week, we've decided to look at the upcoming film "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil".

  • What will its 3-day opening weekend be?
  • How about its domestic total?
  • And its worldwide total?

It's appreciated that you do all three, but it's not required.

Just like Marcie, I'm going to be averaging out the top 3 voted answers and treating that as our official Reddit estimate. So I encourage you to upvote and downvote answers based on which ones you agree with. However, if you have any ideas for tweaks to the format, you are welcome to suggest them, and I will take them into consideration.

Last week, we predicted "Gemini Man", arriving at the following consensus figures based on the 3 predictions with the most total points:

  • $24.7 million domestic OW
  • $69 million domestic total
  • $215.7 million worldwide total

For comparison, Box Office Pro is calling for a $28 million domestic OW and a $90 million domestic total. That would add up to approximately $281 million worldwide, using our consensus 32/68 domestic/international split.

Some miscellaneous trivia about last week's results:

  • Only 2/20 OW predictions called for "Gemini Man" to open below "Looper". For the third consecutive time, that put my prediction on the conservative end; as evidenced by my supporting comments last week, I did not expect that.
  • In general, our consensus was surprisingly strong for one of the biggest wildcards of the fall. 12/20 predictors (including 7 of the 8 most upvoted) are calling for an OW in between $20 and $30 million, while 13/20 expect its domestic multiple to range from 2.75x to 3.25x, and 17/20 think it will make over 60% of its worldwide gross outside of North America.
  • Quite unlike BOP, we seem to think that it's about as likely that "Gemini Man" opens over $50 million domestically as that "Joker" exceeds $100 million in its domestic opening. Either that, or people chose to err on the conservative side for the latter, relative to its realm of possibility.
