Post Body

Welcome back to my biweekly series chronicling the highlights of the international box office. For an additional explanation about the data, see the original post. Without further ado, let's get to it!

Major Territories:

Australia: Spider-Man: Far From Home lived large in its seven-day opening, starting on Monday, July 1st both to gain more distance from The Lion King and to squeeze more money from the rolling winter school holidays beginning that day in much of the country. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie comfortably topped the weekend box office with $7,283,065 from a reported 731 theaters, for a total of $12,148,039 since Monday. Its full start was 91% of Captain Marvel’s first seven days and 110% of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s first seven days. While it slipped far behind Far From Home, Toy Story 4 remained firmly in play with an 18% drop to a second-place $3,685,398 at 495 theaters in its third weekend. However, its $17,605,360 total to date remained behind comparable movies Toy Story 3 (by 34%), Finding Dory (by 25%), and Incredibles 2 (by 9%) through the same point.

The also-rans started with Yesterday, which descended 32% to round out the top three in its second weekend, making $1,621,980 at 278 theaters. Studios don’t really make this type of movie anymore, so even the best comparisons for its total of $4,968,291 to date are stretches. It’s down 32% from fellow music-themed summer 2019 counterprogrammer Rocketman through eleven days, though up 22% from fellow music-themed rom-com Music and Lyrics through the same point. Fellow Universal-distributed movie The Secret Life of Pets 2 hung around in fourth with a 24% increase to $1,325,722 at 313 theaters in its third weekend. Nonetheless, the underperforming sequel has slipped further behind its predecessor; its $7,803,549 total is just 57% of what the first Pets had grossed through the same point. Annabelle Comes Home brought home the top five with a 40% fall to make $812,110 at 218 theaters over its second weekend; at $2,632,368 to date, it’s pacing 28% behind Annabelle: Creation through the same point. One final shoutout goes to Aladdin, which has surpassed The Jungle Book’s $22,694,801 lifetime total by now after reaching $22,535,242 as of the end of last weekend. Aladdin has followed the same pattern in Australia as elsewhere, with great holds redeeming a mediocre opening. Overall, the weekend’s $17,818,246 total gross weighed in 16% ahead of the same frame last year.

Brazil: The inexorable march of weakening exchange rates and hefty winter school holiday competition weighed down Far From Home’s nonetheless solid $8,001,298 first-place start on 1,598 screens. In dollars, that was 10% behind Homecoming and 40% behind Captain Marvel. As in much of the world, Toy Story 4 was the runner-up; with a healthy 26% drop against hefty competition, it grossed $3,133,634 in its third weekend. Its $21,991,279 total to date is 7% below Finding Dory and 5% below Incredibles 2, though a hefty 67% above Toy Story 3, all through the same point. Annabelle Comes Home is suffering against the tough competition, with a 40% fall to $1,168,538 on 842 screens in third over its second weekend. As far as I can tell, its total to date should be $4,281,087, which is barely ahead of Annabelle: Creation’s $4,277,667 opening. Two also-ran family movies seeking school holiday dollars rounded out the top five. Turma da Mônica: Laços, the first live-action theatrical adaptation of the popular Brazilian comic strip series, made $1,022,060 on 636 screens in its second weekend, down 20% for a $3,126,687 total to date. Finally, The Secret Life of Pets 2 suffered 39%, making just $840,473 on 642 screens in its second weekend. Its $3,512,761 total so far has yet to match the $4,381,203 opening of the first Pets.

France: Opening on the last day of France’s special two-for-one ticket Fete du Cine event helped Far From Home debut with $8,270,495 at 833 theaters. That was 91% of Captain Marvel and 131% of Homecoming, in their respective opening. In second, the continued heat has left Toy Story 4 tottering overall, despite a reasonable 33% drop to $4,153,293 in its second weekend. Its $12,938,484 total to date is only 65% of Toy Story 3 and 72% of Incredibles 2 through the same point, though it is at least running 23% ahead of French underperformer Finding Dory through its second weekend. In third, Ibiza’s $1,852,800 start at 557 theaters continued the months-long dry streak that the types of bawdy local comedies that normally make hay at the French box office have suffered through since Serial (Bad) Weddings 2. The last major debut of the weekend, Yesterday, settled for fourth with $1,168,649 at 411 theaters, trailing Rocketman by 36% and Music and Lyrics by 44%. Parasite rounded out the top five with an effectively chart-besting 26% decline as its release reached its probable widest point. South Korea’s first Palme d’Or winner made another $762,236 from 600 theaters, for a total of $8,574,724 so far. It’s about to surpass The Tree of Life’s $8,913,366 total to become the highest grossing Palme d’Or winner of the past ten years.

Germany: Here, the extreme heat and bright sunshine that stifled the previous frame abated just in time for Far From Home to impress in its $5,125,891 debut, supposedly at 1,368 theaters (most likely its misreported screen count). Though that fell 35% short of Captain Marvel, it trounced Homecoming by 39%. The improving weather allowed The Secret Life of Pets 2 to surge by 50%, even as it fell to second. It made $2,940,487 at 746 theaters for a total of $7,085,816 to date, which still hasn’t reached the first Pets’s $7,110,257 opening. Annabelle Comes Home settled for a lackluster $1,285,736 third place debut, which was 86% of Annabelle: Creation despite the latter facing unfavorable weather. Aladdin is still clinging tight to the top five after seven weekends, rising 30% to make $682,845; its $16,726,221 total to date is 1% ahead of Maleficent through the same point. Finally, Five Feet Apart fell from third to fifth in its third frame despite a 34% jump to $618,315 over the weekend. Its $2,773,199 total to date is ahead of Love, Simon’s lifetime total.

India: Far From Home was the big event over the weekend, expectedly swinging high with a $6,521,818 opening over the weekend proper on 1,968 screens. Hampered by burning off demand with a Thursday start (four-day total: $8,287,744), that was 95% of Captain Marvel and 101% of Homecoming. However, it was Bollywood romantic drama Kabir Singh that was making the biggest headlines, reaching an approximate gross of $43.78 million through July 12 with continued great holds – by far the highest for an Indian film with an A (adults only) rating certificate.

Italy: Annabelle Comes Home did just enough to top the box office over a typically quiet summer weekend, with a proper weekend opening of $1,175,125 on 428 screens. That was already ahead of Annabelle: Creation, without counting the latest movie’s $471,257 opening day. However, Creation held very well, so the jury’s still out on whether Annabelle 3 can top its estimated $4.2 million total. Toy Story 4, on the other hand, has rapidly turned into the latest summer botch, with a 47% decline to make a mere $1,035,077 on 718 screens in its second weekend. Its $4,100,046 total to date is just 42% of what fellow summer release Toy Story 3 had grossed by the end of its second weekend. Finally, Avengers: Endgame found success in its re-release to round out the top three; its $333,384 gross on 240 screens brought its total to date up to a monumental $33,726,508.

Japan: Aladdin finished its five-weekend reign atop the charts in style, declining 21% to gross $6,442,465. Its total of $79,176,155 is running just 1% behind Beauty and the Beast through the same point (after making 65% more over the analogous weekend) and has easily exceeded Maleficent’s entire run. In second, Spider-Man continued being the most popular Western superhero in Japan, as Far From Home fell 44% to a second-place second weekend gross of $3,629,149 on 465 screens. Its $17,299,073 total to date is 3% ahead of its predecessor through the same point, which had benefited greatly from the Obon holiday period. Warner Bros.-distributed local movie The Diner rounded out the top three with a $1,756,882 debut over the proper weekend.

Mexico: Here is another country where Far From Home opened ahead of the proper weekend, mucking up comparisons just as it did in North America. The latest Spider-Man movie made $10,386,486 from 3,806 screens over the proper weekend, for a total four-day opening of $13,413,393. The former figure is behind both Captain Marvel and Homecoming, whereas the latter is ahead of both movies. Against the tough competition, Toy Story 4 collapsed 61% to a $4,980,637 third weekend, effectively killing its chances of besting Endgame. Still, its $60,039,956 total to date is already ahead of the lifetime totals of Toy Story 3 and Coco, while it has almost beaten Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 combined. Lastly, Annabelle Comes Home suffered against the tough summer competition here as elsewhere; it made $2,124,583 over its sophomore frame for a $12,105,914 total to date, which is 90% of Annabelle: Creation through the same point.

Russia-CIS: Far From Home was the big box office event in its $9,637,262 debut on 2,518 screens. That was 24% ahead of Homecoming, though it was 10% behind Captain Marvel’s holiday-goosed opening. No other movie in play grossed even $1 million, though there were a few that barely justified total gross updates. Annabelle Comes Home’s $4,350,677 through the end of its second weekend was 5% behind Annabelle: Creation through the same point, while A Dog’s Journey, also concluding its second weekend, has bested the lifetime total of A Dog’s Purpose ($2,434,118 versus $1,917,076) thanks to summer school holidays and a much wider release. Finally, Toy Story 4’s $6,721,055 total through the end of its third weekend, while running behind Finding Dory and well behind Incredibles 2 through the same point, has at least bested Toy Story 3’s lifetime total.

South Korea: Aladdin’s reign has abated with the arrival of the Marvel juggernaut, as Far From Home let its presence be felt, with a $24,554,461 start on 2,173 screens over the proper weekend. Its $33,454,035 total start is 31% above Homecoming’s total debut, as well as 39% above Captain Marvel’s total opening. Aladdin was hardly any worse for the wear, though, as only dropped 37%, nonetheless the weakest hold of its incredible run, against the tough competition. Its $4,440,915 seventh weekend was good for a $66,917,343 total; compared to fellow musical sleeper smashes, that was 11% behind Frozen and 9% ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody through the same point. Toy Story 4 rounded out the top three with a 54% fall to $2,464,287 in its third weekend; its $20,384,695 total to date has bested the lifetime cumes of Toy Story 3 and Finding Dory, and it will soon do the same relative to Incredibles 2. A few more notable totals to date: $71,128,149 for Parasite (14th all time for local movies), $6,123,141 for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (327% of its predecessor’s lifetime total), and $2,822,724 for Annabelle Comes Home (52% of its predecessor’s opening).

Spain: It was the same story here as the rest of the world: Far From Home opened in a commanding first, with $4,361,687, supposedly from 968 theaters (more likely screens). Also in common with much of the world, that was ahead of Homecoming (by 31%), but behind Captain Marvel (by 11%). A third commonality with other countries was that Toy Story 4 was the movie in second, with a 34% decline to $1,755,913 in its third frame. Its $14,510,785 total to date is 9% behind Incredibles 2 (as well as behind Toy Story 3, which didn’t have a comparable release) and 10% ahead of Finding Dory through the same point. Yesterday rounded out the top three with a $996,237 proper weekend debut from 353 theaters, which was 12% below Music and Lyrics but 93% above Rocketman. Also worthy of mentions: Aladdin, in fourth over its seventh weekend with a $24,967,596 total to date, has exceeded Beauty and the Beast’s lifetime total, while Los Japón, a local comedy starring Dani Rovira of Spanish Affair fame, is a big bust with just $1,703,810 as of the end of its second weekend.

Selected Non-Major Territory Highlights:

Far From Home bested Homecoming’s debuts in an apples-to-apples comparison throughout the (mostly) rapidly growing midsized territories of Asia – in Hong Kong (where it opened early), Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, the Spider-Man sequel has grossed a combined $35,380,137 to date. Homecoming had made $24,707,539 through the same point in the same seven markets.

On the other hand, Argentina was one of three territories where Far From Home failed to top the weekend box office, as it couldn’t match Toy Story 4’s sheer dominance. After a $2,471,875 weekend (a 47% decline against tough competition), Toy Story 4’s $18,602,531 total to date has already beaten Endgame’s lifetime total, and the Toys have much further to go still. By the end of this weekend, it will become the most attended movie of all time in Argentina, though the US dollar record is out of reach thanks to massive inflation. Also a testament to said inflation: Far From Home’s $1,611,591 debut on 412 screens fell about a third short of Homecoming in dollars despite besting it in admissions.

Focus On: Indonesia:

Of all the midsized Asian territories, just one has stood out above the rest in recent years. Indonesia, with its 260 million people and top-10 world economy in purchasing power parity terms, is that market. Over the past few years, the archipelago has increasingly frequently featured among the top 10, or sometimes even top 5, openings for Hollywood blockbusters. Far From Home is the latest such blockbuster to put up a scorching opening there, with $9,798,342 on 1,889 screens – its fifth largest opening of all international territories. For more context, read on, starting with the all-time Indonesian top 10, in dollars, using Film Indonesia for local admissions data necessary for conversion:

  1. $34,459,268 Avengers: Endgame
  2. $25,288,929 Avengers: Infinity War
  3. $19,409,550 Captain Marvel
  4. $19,329,335 The Fate of the Furious
  5. $18,090,734 Aladdin
  6. $18,020,536 Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss Part 1 [local comedy]
  7. $17,561,970 Dilan 1990 [local romantic drama]
  8. $17,500,000 (est.) Aquaman
  9. $16,768,758 Furious 7
  10. $15,504,514 Avengers: Age of Ultron

Note that the gross of Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss Part 1 in particular may be off, depending on what the contemporary exchange rate was at the time of its release. Of course, the most important trend here is the same as most of Asia – Hollywood blockbusters clean up. However, there’s a few interesting details hidden behind the scenes. Aladdin’s incredible success in particular is unconventional both for the type of movie it is and because of its unusually leggy run in a typically frontloaded market – its $3,675,767 opening is barely a fifth of its final gross, versus the more conventional 45-60%. Furthermore, Indonesia is Aladdin’s tenth highest-grossing territory, coming in ahead of France, Germany, and Italy. Another peculiarly Indonesian quirk is that specifically supernatural horror is huge. Among Hollywood fare, The Nun is the leader with an estimated $13.8 million, good for its fourth biggest territory in the all-time Indonesian top 20, while The Conjuring 2 made $12.5 million all the way back in 2016, making it the fourth biggest movie of the year. Another standout in this vein is Insidious: The Last Key; its $9,080,255 Indonesian gross is more than it made in any other territory outside of North America and almost 10% of its whole international run.

On the more macro level of market-wide developments, Indonesia used to be highly under-supplied in terms of screens and cinemas just a few years back – partially responsible for its usual frontloadedness, since even the biggest hits could only stay in play for a few weeks. Indonesia was far more drastically under-supplied with cinemas and characterized by untapped potential 5-10 years ago, which is why Avatar is nowhere to be seen in its all-time top 10. Steady cinema expansion over the past few years has gone a long way towards fixing the supply-demand issue; for example, Far From Home opened on 75% more screens than Homecoming, yet it didn’t see commensurate revenue growth. Nowadays, word of mouth hits such as Aladdin can retain enough screens to hold strongly for a few weeks, as long as they don’t have too much upfront demand. Still, Indonesia’s huge population and economy indicate that there’s yet more untapped potential to be exploited by Hollywood and local studios alike; at the current pace, it will likely become a proper major territory in a few years, ideally with more comprehensive box office charts than what’s available now.

As I mentioned earlier, Far From Home dominated the weekend box office with its $9,798,342 opening, 45% ahead of Homecoming and 10% behind Captain Marvel. Slightly above average holds from here would allow it to cross $20 million and best Captain Marvel to become Indonesia’s third highest-grossing movie ever. Toy Story 4 plunged 73% after a good second weekend hold to just $333,856; its $5,887,471 total to date is only 73% of Incredibles 2. Lastly, Men in Black: International is effectively out of play in only its third weekend, though its $4,833,082 total to date is unsurprisingly substantially ahead of its predecessor.

Unfortunately, this series will most likely be going on temporary hiatus from here, due to my upcoming schedule. I may wind up having the time to continue it next week, though that remains to be seen. As always, I look forward to any feedback or other comments anyone might have!
