Post Body

Welcome back to my weekly series chronicling the highlights of the international box office. For a further explanation on the data, see the original post. This post will inevitably be all about Captain Marvel, for which I could have included a bunch of comparisons, but I chose to restrict it as much as possible to the three most relevant, IMO: Black Panther (the most prominent comparison I’ve seen around), Iron Man 3 (the current MCU solo record-holder), and Avengers: Infinity War (just to see how close Captain Marvel is getting). Without further ado, let's get to it!

Major Territories:

Australia: Down under, as with most everywhere else, Captain Marvel dominated. Its $9,580,749 opening on 862 (presumably screens) added up to a total of $10,635,660 to date. Comparing total openings, that was 47% of Avengers: Infinity War ($22,698,063), 59% of Iron Man 3 ($18,008,064), both of which benefited from Anzac Day, and 115% of Black Panther ($9,232,742). A Dog’s Way Home repeated in second, but far behind the top spot, with $620,602 at 274 theaters in its second weekend; however, that represented a worse hold and total through the same point than A Dog’s Purpose, despite a larger opening. Green Book rounded out the top three, driving to another $567,521 of green at 304 theaters in its seventh weekend. With $8,329,525 to date, it still looks likely to ultimately exceed Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri ($9,394,396 in total).

Brazil: The most populous country in Latin America was lionized by Captain Marvel over the weekend. In a market that loves superhero fare, its $13,258,157 opening was still well above the norm, equating to 70% of Avengers: Infinity War ($19,062,450), 113% of Iron Man 3 ($11,694,313), and a whopping 139% of Black Panther ($9,539,422).

France: While still strong in first place, Captain Marvel’s French opening was arguably one of its weakest major debuts, relatively speaking (edit: apparently this is actually a solid MCU showing, and France just isn't that big a market for the franchise). At $9,093,585 at 539 theaters, it trailed behind the second weekend of local hit comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings 2 earlier this year. Among MCU movies, it reached 52% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $17,643,504 opening at 843 theaters and 61% of Iron Man 3’s $14,900,795 debut at 740 theaters. However, Captain Marvel did open to 119% of Black Panther’s $7,627,163. The rest of the box office was far behind, though ten other movies (including the aforementioned Weddings as the best of the holdovers) still made over $1 million each, resulting in a total weekend gross of $28,815,407 – marginally ahead of the equivalent weekend last year.

Germany: As with almost everywhere else it opened, Captain Marvel easily topped the German box office. However, Germany is not a big country for superhero fare, which left Captain Marvel’s opening, at $7,909,987, relatively less impressive than much of the world. That added up to 135% of Black Panther’s $5,860,941 opening, though it trailed Avengers: Infinity War, with 52% of its $15,301,422, and Iron Man 3, with 88% of its $8,998,608. Likely aided by the weather in a weather-dependent market, most of the holdovers held admirably against Captain Marvel’s onslaught. For example, Green Book dipped just 12% in second, with another $1,599,126 at 729 theaters in its sixth weekend. Its $10,340,831 total to date is comparable to La La Land’s $10,390,207 through the same point. Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World rounded out the top three, descending 16% to $1,499,733 at 701 theaters in its fifth weekend. However, its $18,419,918 total to date still trails its predecessor’s $22,064,433 through the same point.

India: Captain Marvel blasted off to a huge $6,880,249 debut in India. While that was expectedly a fraction of Avengers: Infinity War’s $18,464,603, it still weighed in at 135% of Iron Man 3’s $5,113,914, and 178% of Black Panther’s $3,874,526.

Italy: Captain Marvel expectedly dominated the Italian box office, with a $4,576,917 opening on 773 screens over the weekend. Its $5,455,849 total opening represented 156% of Black Panther’s $3,501,710 on 487 screens. However, it trailed behind Avengers: Infinity War, at 50% of its $10,983,836 total opening on 976 screens, and even further behind Iron Man 3, with 49% of its $11,175,754 total opening on 862 (presumably) screens. Green Book held well in second, dropping 32% for another $834,567 on 351 screens in its sixth weekend and a total of $9,434,301 to date. In comparison, The Shape of Water had grossed $10,090,188 through the same point. Among other notable openings, two French comedy sequels lagged far behind their respective predecessors. Serial (Bad) Weddings 2 rounded out the top three with $682,339 in its opening on 348 screens, versus the original movie’s $1,266,924 Italian debut. Meanwhile, the animated Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion lagged further behind, with a fifth place $382,096 start on 345 screens. The previous Asterix movie opened to $777,043 back in 2015.

Japan: In the only notable part of the world where Captain Marvel didn’t open this past weekend, it was mainly local movies making waves. Again, local animation Doraemon: Nobita’s Chronicle of the Moon Exploration topped the box office, with a 12% sophomore slide to $5,505,502. Its total of $13,417,381 to date still compares unfavorably with its predecessor’s $15,997,127 through the same period, though. In second, another local movie, Fly Me to the Saitama, had another great hold, down just 3% to make another $2,432,711 in its third weekend. The prominent Hollywood movies came after those two, starting with Green Book’s mere 6% decline (comparing proper two-day frames) in its second weekend. With $1,708,106 on 250 screens over the weekend, its $6,811,363 total is way ahead of The Shape of Water’s $4,312,230 through the same point.

Fourth is where we find the first of the two notable debuts, as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened with $1,438,610 on 313 screens, for a total of $2,280,616 to date. It’s hard to find appropriate comparisons due to this movie’s unique nature, but I’ll try: This was easily the worst Spider-Man opening yet, but it’s already beaten The LEGO Movie’s $1,743,079 total. On the other hand, fellow Sony Pictures Animation title Peter Rabbit still made more over the proper weekend, at $1,679,318 on 463 screens. Meanwhile, The Mule was limited to fifth, with an acceptable three-day debut of $1.8 million (according to Corpse, as BOM failed to report its opening). However, that was still behind Sully’s $2,229,101 two-day start back in September 2016.

Mexico: The only real highlight of the Mexican box office was none other than Captain Marvel. With a great $12,812,530 debut, its opening added up to 50% of Avengers: Infinity War ($25,382,566), 75% of Iron Man 3 ($17,067,467), and 139% of Black Panther ($9,207,156). In other news, though, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World clung to second with another $382,549 on 638 screens in its sixth weekend. With $20,526,224 to date, the trilogy conclusion has officially exceeded its predecessor’s $19,941,262 total (a milestone it accomplished over the weekend ending March 3, in fact).

Russia-CIS: Captain Marvel benefited from the International Women’s Day holiday occasion to score a strong first-place debut of $10,728,619. There’s no proper comparison to be had to Black Panther, due to the unusual nature of its Russian rollout, nor to Iron Man 3, because the value of the Russian ruble has plunged against the US dollar since 2013. However, it did comfortably beat Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $7,798,396 start, while expectedly trailing Avengers: Infinity War’s $18,193,251 opening. In second, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World benefited from the holiday, sliding just 24% in a typically fast-burn market to make another $4,064,115 on 1,770 screens in its third weekend. With a total of $23,240,842 to date, the threequel looks likely to outgross The Boss Baby’s $26,395,096 in total.

South Korea: Captain Marvel well and truly destroyed the competition with an $18,146,391 debut on 2,098 screens over the proper weekend. Its $24,023,317 total opening was 95% of Black Panther’s $25,332,202 on 1,620 screens, despite the latter being partially set and shot in South Korea. It was also 123% of Iron Man 3’s $19,553,284 total start on 1,491 screens, and 61% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $39,173,384 total debut on 2,553 screens. Against such a hefty opening, the four major holdovers suffered plunges in the 75 to 85% range.

Spain: Captain Marvel expectedly topped the box office, scoring a debut of $4,894,726 – very healthy by the standards of a market that’s been diminished by economic conditions over the past several years. For comparison, that was 57% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $8,637,415, 98% of Iron Man 3’s $4,990,454, and 162% of Black Panther’s $3,017,030. In second, The Mule counterprogrammed its way to a $1,325,790 start at 288 theaters. Sully opened slightly higher, at $1,467,846 on 497 (presumably screens) in November 2016 before holding poorly. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World descended by 43%, taking it from first to third with a third weekend gross of $1,034,006 at 315 theaters. Despite a higher-grossing third frame, its $6,941,187 total gross lagged further behind its predecessor’s $8,484,324 through the same point.

Non-Major Territories:

Chile: Captain Marvel has excelled in Latin America, both in the major and non-major territories for which data is available. Its Chilean debut mustered $2,334,642, for 52% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $4,525,397, 118% of Iron Man 3’s $1,983,813, and a huge 202% of Black Panther’s $1,156,408. Among notable holdovers, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World grossed $128,903 on 64 screens in its seventh weekend to reach a total of $4,751,033 to date, marginally behind its predecessor’s $5,148,409 through the same point. Finally, Green Book’s mere $377,287 to date has nonetheless outgrossed the $354,123 Three Billboards made in total.

Colombia: Captain Marvel unsurprisingly crushed the holdovers with a dominant $2,674,729 opening on 203 screens. That was 57% of Avengers: Infinity War ($4,682,630), 107% of Iron Man 3 ($2,493,283), and 141% of Black Panther ($1,895,472). While no holdovers truly stood out against Captain Marvel’s onslaught, some were nonetheless in play. Those included How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, at $4,019,229 through its eighth weekend, versus $4,751,536 for its predecessor through the same point, and Green Book, which has zoomed ahead of Three Billboards with $523,135 to date versus $313,278 in total.

Czech Republic: This was one of Captain Marvel’s more impressive territories, continuing the country’s recent box office hot streak. The latest MCU hit made $1,108,668 at 146 theaters in its opening, which added up to 66% of Avengers: Infinity War ($1,674,394 at 145 theaters), 161% of Black Panther ($688,746 at 140 theaters), and 166% of Iron Man 3 ($669,480 at only 54 theaters). Meanwhile, Green Book braved the competition with healthy results, managing $132,492 in its debut at 77 theaters. That was around double La La Land, Three Billboards, and The Shape of Water; however, all of those movies opened before the Oscars. Among holdovers, local smash Zeny v behu held second in its sixth weekend, declining a modest 24% to make another $452,733 at 114 theaters for $6,436,983 to date. Expect it to set the new local box office record within the next week at most. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was affected a bit more by the competition, sinking by 41% to third with another $401,522 at 90 theaters in its third weekend. Still, its $2,399,411 cume to date has nearly outdistanced its predecessor’s $2,413,445 in total.

Hong Kong: It was business as usual for the MCU in Hong Kong, with Captain Marvel opening to a total of $5,198,494. That was 65% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $8,043,759, 110% of Iron Man 3’s $4,709,819, and 117% of Black Panther’s $4,426,543 total opening. In common with much of Southeast Asia, Black Panther was a major beneficiary of the Lunar New Year festivities, whereas Captain Marvel opened without any holidays to benefit it throughout the region (except in Indonesia).

Indonesia: One of Captain Marvel’s brightest lights was here, especially when considering the smashing opening of local romance Dilan 1991 just the previous weekend. Captain Marvel’s holiday-boosted $10,848,400 five-day opening was 95% of Avengers: Infinity War ($11,414,539) and a whopping 160% of Black Panther ($6,785,265 total opening). In addition, its explosive 205% of Iron Man 3’s $5,301,345 total opening underscored the market’s growth over the past six years.

Malaysia: Captain Marvel opened to a dominant $5,568,352 – 118% of Iron Man 3 ($4,725,529), 104% of Black Panther’s $5,345,048 total opening, and 66% of Avengers: Infinity War ($11,414,539).

Poland: Captain Marvel impressed by beating a major local movie debut to the top spot, in a market where audiences are generally indifferent at best to superhero fare. Its $1,568,276 opening represented 66% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $2,563,818 (nowhere near the country’s OW record), 104% of Iron Man 3’s $1,507,571, and 123% of Black Panther’s $1,277,362. The aforementioned major local picture, a comedy by the name of Cale szczescie, had to settle for second with a $1,005,943 debut on 385 screens. Meanwhile, another local movie, Women of Mafia 2, was reduced to third with a $660,115 third weekend, causing it to lag further behind its predecessor.

Two animated movies rounded out the top five in a territory that’s fond of animation. The Queen’s Corgi, by a Belgian studio behind the Sammy’s Adventures series among other animated efforts, increased 15% in its second weekend to make $573,419. The resulting total of $1,441,247 to date trumped the $1,380,725 made in total by the studio’s last effort, The Son of Bigfoot. Despite being knocked down to fifth, though, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World continued to pace ahead of its predecessor through the same point with a 33% fall, for a $369,773 fourth weekend on 160 screens, and a total of $5,283,062 to date. Green Book was knocked out of the top five, but it still continued its strong run, slipping 26% in its fifth weekend to make another $322,288 on 116 screens. Its total to date is $3,364,318, narrowly ahead of La La Land’s $3,160,623 through the same point.

Singapore: In a tiny country with fewer than 6 million people, Captain Marvel still managed to reach $3,032,399 worth of paying patrons. That opening was 65% of Avengers: Infinity War ($4,679,612), 81% of Iron Man 3 ($3,761,476), and 95% of Black Panther ($3,203,876 total opening), all reflective of a country with its growth potential capped by its low population.

Taiwan: Captain Marvel was as impressive here as anywhere else, smashing the competition with a $6,155,035 debut. That was 63% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $9,803,239 and 92% of Black Panther’s holiday-boosted $6,702,117 total debut (BOM does not have Taiwanese data for Iron Man 3). While it dropped steeply against the MCU bluster, Green Book has quietly had a solid run, totaling $1,246,661 to date – way ahead of The Shape of Water’s $946,505 total.

Thailand: Captain Marvel was where the action in Bangkok was, as it managed a staggering $6,536,142 in its opening. That was 66% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $9,941,722, 138% of Black Panther’s $4,742,032 total opening, and a huge 186% of Iron Man 3’s $3,513,762.

The Netherlands: While Captain Marvel still dominated on top, this was one of the few countries where it fell behind Black Panther, with $2,317,312 on 119 screens – 90% of the latter’s $2,563,898 total on 105 screens. Captain Marvel further added up to 60% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $3,830,456 start on 120 screens, but it did excel at 136% of Iron Man 3’s $1,704,900 total opening on 113 screens. In second, The Queen’s Corgi dipped 23% to make another $626,199 on 135 screens in its fourth weekend. With $3,629,228 to date, it’s locked to finish ahead of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which has reached $3,831,147 to date after making another $133,449 on 113 screens – also behind its predecessor’s pace. That attests to the perils of releasing family movies in the Netherlands without close proximity to school holidays.

In other weekend action, Green Book has officially outgrossed both Three Billboards and La La Land after making another $488,940 on 135 screens over its sixth weekend. Meanwhile, WB tried a similar counterprogramming play with The Mule as Spain, with a decent opening of $324,367 on 76 screens – marginally ahead of Sully’s launch from a higher screen count – as the result. Last but not least, Bohemian Rhapsody appears to have finally ceased holding onto its beat, dropping 50% to gross another $195,754 on 151 screens in its nineteenth weekend. That, along with its resulting $24,022,230 total, makes it look like a long shot to outgross Skyfall ($25,100,238) for the second all time spot, but I wouldn’t count it out just yet.

The Philippines: Captain Marvel wasn’t quite as exceptional here as in much of Southeast Asia, but that could be blamed on the Philippines already being a thoroughly tapped market for the MCU. It still opened to $6,113,889, or 49% of Avengers: Infinity War ($12,500,128), 82% of Iron Man 3 ($7,413,925), and 116% of Black Panther ($5,277,782 total opening).

Turkey: The value of the Turkish lira has collapsed by one-third since February 2018 and two-thirds since April 2013 against the US dollar. Despite that, Captain Marvel started strongly in dollar terms, with $1,380,184 on 388 screens. That was 54% of Avengers: Infinity War’s $2,566,580 debut, 97% of Iron Man 3’s $1,418,479 opening, and 141% of Black Panther’s $976,866 start. Still, there’s almost no chance its total beats local comedy Organize Isler: Sazan Sarmali’s $9,862,945 to date, after slipping to third in its sixth weekend. That’s not unexpected, given that local fare often dominates in Turkey.

Ukraine: With the help of International Women’s Day (presumably a major holiday just as it is in Russia), Ukraine was the only notable country where Captain Marvel beat even Avengers: Infinity War on opening. The good captain surged to $1,399,971 on 426 screens, 102% of Infinity War’s $1,372,912 on 437 screens, and 144% of Black Panther’s $974,941 on 374 screens. It even beat Iron Man 3, despite the country’s currency collapse in the intervening period (though its screen count has also exploded since 2013). In second, The Queen’s Corgi opened to $416,258 on 286 screens, beating The Son of Bigfoot’s $287,958 total. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was third with $335,032 on 280 screens in its third weekend, reaching $2,329,735 to trump The Boss Baby’s $1,768,721 total in the process.

Vietnam: Captain Marvel dominated with a $1,941,441 opening over the proper weekend. Its $2,160,304 total to date has already beaten Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $2,140,029 overall total, which is the only MCU comparison for which I can find data on BOM. Local female-fronted revenge action flick Furie was second in its third weekend, with another $393,156, for a total of $4,585,943 to date. Among other notable totals, Alita: Battle Angel has reached $2,068,778, while How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has flown to $3,203,827, versus The Boss Baby’s $4,000,590.
