Welcome back to my weekly series chronicling the highlights of the international box office. For a further explanation on the data, see last week's post. Without further ado, let's get to it!
Major Territories:
Australia: Despite threepeating on top of a slow weekend, Alita: Battle Angel had another average hold, down 37% to $1,038,920 at 365 theaters, for a total of $6,697,462 to date. By comparison, Ready Player One descended 36% to $1,247,981 at 325 venues in its third weekend, and had a total of $8,849,504 through that point, en route to a $10.7 million finish. In second place, A Dog's Way Home opened to an expectedly modest $900,457 at 269 locations, for a total of $1,013,116 to date. That's marginally ahead of A Dog's Purpose, which also missed school holidays and debuted to $894,108 at 271 locales back in May 2017. Rounding out the top three, Green Book climbed 33% to record an $863,851 sixth frame at 309 theaters. Its cume to date increased to $7,493,547, versus $6,915,414 for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri through its sixth weekend. Meanwhile, Greta missed the top 5 in its international debut with a floppish $362,835 start at 195 locales - expect it to get eviscerated by Captain Marvel this upcoming weekend. Overall, it's no surprise that the weekend set a new low for 2019 to date, with all movies in release recording a mere $6,533,284 over the weekend.
Brazil: Local movies took two of the top three spots, but with nothing reaching $1 million, they couldn't exactly be described as dominant. Family romance Cinderela Pop opened on top with just $865,483 on 456 screens, while comedy Sai de Baixo: O Filme increased to $649,271 on 266 screens in its second weekend, for a total of $1,505,481 to date. Hollywood's top 3 contribution came in the form of A Dog's Way Home, which was unleashed for a $654,084 start on 406 screens, versus $839,403 on 433 screens for A Dog's Purpose. Among holdovers, Alita was still in play, but its third weekend of $529,270 on 642 screens lagged behind Ready Player One's $656,510 on 583 screens. Alita's total reached $3,772,463, compared to $4,935,078 for RPO through the same point, en route to a $6 million finish. Finally, Green Book surged by 152% to record a $392,972 sixth frame at 226 screens. That puts its cume, at $2,258,353 to date, within inches of the $2,272,251 Three Billboards made in total.
France: To start with the bad news, weekend box office, at $28,060,284, was way down from last year's analogous frame, which saw Dany Boon's delayed Welcome to the Sticks pseudo-sequel La ch'tite famille open as part of a $41,042,856 weekend. Now onto the good: the weekend as a whole displayed bountiful depth, with 11(!) movies exceeding $1 million each, while a twelfth was less than $10,000 away from the mark. For a fifth time, it was Serial (Bad) Weddings 2 on top, with $3,241,084 at 820 theaters. The comedy sequel will surpass Infinity War within the next week, though it ultimately won't get close to its predecessor's total. Meanwhile, Alita three-peated in second, down 31% to $2,626,853 at 581 theaters for a total of $14,593,523 to date. Ready Player One had made marginally less through the same point, at $13,805,655.
Among the other holdovers, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Ralph Breaks the Internet continued satisfying schoolkids. With respective weekends of $2,455,797 at 808 theaters (Dragon's fourth) for a total of $20,768,199 and $2,185,251 (Ralph's third) for a total of $12,314,520, the two continued comparing well to their predecessors. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part wasn't so fortunate, lagging further behind LEGO Batman with a twelfth-place $993,613 second weekend at 458 theaters. Meanwhile, Green Book's crowdpleasing approach to its story continued paying off, with a 53% post-Oscar surge to record a $1,415,716 sixth frame at 698 theaters. With $10,201,865 to date, its total has already eclipsed Three Billboards, while just about catching up with The Shape of Water through the same point, after crushing the latter's sixth weekend.
New openers weren't so fortunate, however. Escape Room was tops with a good $1,884,421 sixth place opening from 229 theaters. However, that was still behind Insidious: The Last Key's $2,161,520 debut at 221 theaters. Meanwhile, Cold Pursuit was only good for tenth place, with just $1,223,281 from 300 theaters - The Commuter opened almost 50% higher at $1,806,420, while Non-Stop flew to $3,490,581 over the analogous frame in 2014. Finally, Instant Family and Mary Queen of Scots both expectedly opened to less than highlight-worthy numbers.
Germany: As with much of the world, the German weekend ending March 3 was a frame for holdovers. Green Book in particular surged up to first place over its fifth weekend, with a 92% bump to $1,811,057 at 617 theaters. Its total of $8,052,138 to date compares favorably to Three Billboards' $7,612,252 over its entire run. Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon 3 had its first strong hold, down just 13% to a $1,781,819 fourth weekend at 715 theaters. Still, its $16,680,155 total to date is now firmly behind its predecessor's $19,628,163 through the same point. Alita also held decently in its third weekend, down 27% to $1,246,689, for a total of $6,863,885 to date - a bit ahead of Ready Player One through the same point.
Among debuts, local girls-meet-horse sequel Ostwind - Aris Ankuft (the fourth in its franchise) cantered slowly in its opening weekend, reaching $1,368,875, versus its predecessor's $1,859,035 in July 2017. Meanwhile, Escape Room saw no escape, initializing with a $1,213,935 weekend at 330 theaters, compared to Insidious: The Last Key's $2,003,696 opening at 313 theaters. Finally, Cold Pursuit was the chilliest of the major openers, with a measly $1,066,833 start - versus The Commuter's $2,006,529.
Italy: Dragon Ball Super: Broly blasted off to a formidable, albeit frontloaded, first place opening of $1,894,810 on 380 screens. That crushed Resurrection 'F's $589,376 start back in September 2015. In second, Green Book saw a 60% increase from its Oscar halo, making $1,232,184 on 475 screens in its fifth weekend, for a total of $8,310,197 to date. In comparison, The Shape of Water had reached $9,433,376 through its fifth weekend, angling towards a final total of $11,087,771. Meanwhile, Happy Death Day 2U was stiffed in fourth, reaching just $629,611 on 283 screens in its first weekend. The original Happy Death Day opened almost twice as high in November 2017, at $1,151,936 on 270 screens. Finally, all the holdovers without Oscar glory cratered against moderate competition from a few more wide openings.
Japan: The latest installment of the Doraemon series, a very long lasting succession of annual kids-oriented anime adaptations of the manga franchise, started with $6,217,594 over the proper weekend. Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration opened behind last year's movie, Nobita's Treasure Island with its $7,973,035 debut, but a lack of heavyweight Disney or Illumination titles upcoming over the late March spring break should give the new movie some breathing room. Second place over the proper weekend was another local movie, Fly Me to the Saitama, with an uncommon (even for Japan) second frame increase to $2,507,447, totaling $8,563,838 to date. Whether or not you add its Friday gross to its proper weekend sum, though, Green Book got off to an excellent start. The Best Picture winner soared to $2,615,784 on just 180 screens over the three-day period, for a whopping $14,532 per-screen average. The movie opened to an estimated $1.8 million over the proper weekend (according to Corpse), versus The Shape of Water's $1,618,212 debut over the same weekend last year.
Fox's fellow Oscar player Bohemian Rhapsody, however, did not see the expected increase. Instead, the movie declined by less than 1%, for a colossal $108,667,093 total after its seventeenth weekend. Fellow Fox-distributed movie Alita: Battle Angel was on the other end of the spectrum, however, crashing by around 50% from its opening, when comparing proper weekend grosses. Its measly $1,147,288 second frame on 840 screens was only good for a $6,241,258 total - less than two-thirds of what Ready Player One had reached through the same point, just ahead of Golden Week (one of Japan's top three holiday periods). Last and certainly least, Mortal Engines was far below the top 10 in its final market, scrounging up just $158,535 on 43 screens over the proper weekend.
Mexico: Ahead of Captain Marvel, the weekend was sorely lacking in highlights. Happy Death Day 2U opened to $1,165,154 on 847 screens in first, trumping its predecessor's exhibitor dispute-hampered $812,663 on only 363 screens. Among the few notable holdovers, Alita is at $7,786,021 through its third weekend, versus $8,605,851 for Ready Player One through the same point. Meanwhile, Green Book surged as expected, but was still outside the top five, reaching a $2,655,504 total to date. That's expectedly low in a country where movies about race relations and rural Americana don't play well, regardless of Green Book's crowd-pleasing nature. Overall, the weekend saw the worst total gross since September 8-10, 2017 - the frame immediately before It opened.
Russia-CIS: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World dominated again ahead of Captain Marvel's opening, in a market where International Women's Day is a major holiday. With a 51% fall to $5,315,021 on 1,763 screens in its second weekend for a total of $18,719,470, however, Dragon continued pacing a bit behind The Boss Baby through the same point. Among notable openings, Happy Death Day 2U scared up just $1,027,385 on 940 screens, a ways down from its predecessor's $1,566,067 on 930 screens. Finally, Alita continued pacing ahead of Ready Player One through the same point, at $11,655,885 versus $10,479,714.
South Korea: Not atypically, South Korea was a busy market for local fare over the weekend. First place over the weekend went to local drama A Resistance (set during the Japanese colonization of the Korean peninsula), with $4,520,281 on 1,094 screens. Thriller Svaha: The Sixth Finger wasn't far behind in its second weekend, with a 43% drop to $3,715,360 on 955 screens for a total of $15,808,900 to date. Meanwhile, the third and fourth slots were occupied by leggy local word of mouth winners. Innocent Witness slipped just 16% to record a third weekend of $2,855,316 on 974 screens, for a total of $16,325,954 to date. Extreme Job recovered with a 29% decline to $2,598,890 on 728 screens in its sixth weekend for an incredible total of $121,909,398; however, it won't make much more, as Captain Marvel looms over this upcoming weekend.
Spain: How to Train Your Dragon 3 won the weekend again, with a 32% drop to record an $1,804,485 second frame at 332 theaters. However, its $5,424,496 total to date is still behind its predecessor's summer holiday-bolstered $6,293,216 through the same point. Green Book rose to second with an expected increase of 36%, making $1,009,726 in its fifth weekend for a $6,988,623 total to date. The Best Picture winner should exceed the $7,637,787 Three Billboards made in total over the next week or so. In third, Alita continued its middling pace despite a near-total lack of new competition, descending by 32% for a third weekend of $723,319 on 405 (probable screens). Its total of $4,773,244 pales compared to Ready Player One's $6,960,049 through the same point.
Non-Major Territories:
Hong Kong: In first over the full week, Alita nonetheless managed a mediocre hold, falling 51% to a $419,977 fourth week. Its $5,632,349 total to date has officially fallen behind Ready Player One ($5,649,400 through the same point), and with Captain Marvel looming, Alita will ultimately finish below Spielberg's futuristic sci-fi adaptation. Kursk wasn't far behind in second, and Hong Kong has officially overtaken France to become its highest-grossing territory (when considering BOM's Dutch goof).
Of the three major weekend openings, Happy Death Day 2U trumped the rest with $363,198 on 52 screens over the proper weekend - soundly beating the original's $234,051 opening on 34 screens. Dragon Ball Super: Broly was next with $316,482, beating the $269,649 Resurrection 'F' made in total. The last notable opening was The Wandering Earth, which followed a typical pattern for big Chinese hits in failing to recreate its home territory success. At just $270,895, the sci-fi smash's start paled even when compared to Monster Hunt's $460,288 debut. Finally, Green Book surged by 256%, and its $1,604,697 total to date is not far off from Three Billboards and The Shape of Water combined.
Indonesia: Local teen romance Dilan 1991 surged to a Deadline-estimated $7.6 million opening, not far off from Infinity War's proper weekend gross. Among Hollywood fare, Fox hasn't updated Alita's total since its second weekend, by which point it had already beaten Ready Player One's total, with $3,817,648 versus $2.7 million in a rapidly growing market. Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon 3 has already played out after its January opening, beating The Boss Baby at $4,639,453 versus $4,002,139.
The Netherlands: The Queen's Corgi made the most of the ongoing school holidays by finally topping the weekend box office, with an 18% improvement to $813,819 on 138 screens. With a total of $2,694,908 to date, the Belgian animated movie could best How to Train Your Dragon 3, which has $3,752,959 to date after a $209,799 seventh weekend on 120 screens. In second, Green Book improved 73% in a typically leggy market to $605,420 on 97 screens in its fifth weekend. At $3,324,228 to date, it will soon beat the $3,478,033 Three Billboards grossed in total last year. Alita fell two spots and 26% to third place in its third weekend, grossing $515,313 on 209 screens. At $2,740,916 to date, it's now locked to outgross Ready Player One's $3 million total. In its eighteenth weekend, though, the dynamite Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't far behind. It made another $390,484 on 166 screens for a $23,707,389 total, leaving second place all-time (currently Skyfall at $25,100,238) no sure thing, but nonetheless within reach. The notable debuts in a holdover-dominated market were Escape Room (in sixth but well ahead of Insidious: The Last Key with $363,774 on 69 screens) and Vice (a mere tenth with $190,713 on 67 screens, marginally beating The Big Short despite having more screens).
The Philippines: How to Train Your Dragon 3 was tops among movies with BOM-reported information, grossing $1,013,788 on 213 screens in its second weekend for a total of $3,471,431 to date. That's ahead of both its predecessor's $2,948,179 through the same point and its $3,284,116 total in a typically frontloaded market. Among other news, Escape Room's $315,503 debut on 204 screens paled compared to Insidious: The Last Key's $1,577,139 on 223 screens, thanks to lacking the supernatural element. As of its second weekend, Alita had made $2,002,958, compared to $2,344,594 for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials through the same point. Finally, Green Book has scrounged up just $36,426 to date in a country where its subject matter makes it an exceptionally tough sell.
Hopefully this formatting is a bit more legible. As always, I look forward to any feedback or other comments anyone might have!
