Was at an event yesterday with Drew - they poured the 4yo Willett-distilled bourbon, as well as a 23yo (clearly NOT Willett-distilled). Interesting comment from him was that only 8 barrels of their distilled product have been released thus far - which seems shockingly low. Maybe he was referring to the four year old portion only? I'll follow up with him to confirm...
Willett Family Estate, Barrel 651, 4 years old, 111 proof, bottle 223 of 235
In any case, the four year old is quite nice, lots of cherry cola on the nose, a good spice profile with some amaro-ish notes. You get the corn on the mid-palate, but it doesn't come across as too young. Cinnamon finish. At 111 proof, this benefitted from some water. I had it in my glass for over an hour and the cherry cola on the nose shifted a bit towards grape soda over time - in a good way. Enjoyable bourbon.
Willett Family Estate, Barrel B60, 23 years old, 132 proof, bottle 80 of 81 (lots of angel's share gone from this barrel!)
According to Drew, this is from the batch that they bought 8 years ago, 1000 barrels at the time, and now there are only 10 barrels left! Wow.
Quick notes from memory - this is in a great spot - maybe just below peak age if you ask me. Full, rich, deep, a nice oak level and just a bit of sawdust on the nose, with loads of brown sugar. Powerful at full strength, and I love it.
