Quick indoor bouldering question

Iām trying not to cheat in a way that would invalidate a climb, but I do want to make things as easy as possible. So with that in mind is it deemed okay to hold on to the top of an indoor bouldering wall and then shimmy to the side to get to the finishing hold for example? Or is holding on to the top of the wall no beuno?
