Working on some volumes for the local gym

Ayy thanks, not perfect by any means but a good learning experience for the next go. Probably went a bit overboard with the mounting hole options but I wanted options for small holds to make for good pinches when grabbing at the corners. Hopefully they work out well and aren't just an eyesore for someone with trypophobia 🌝

Going to be choosing a colour tomorrow and then it's time to finish these bad boys up.  Plan for grit is to use 80grit aluminum oxide blasting medium, sprinkled on a wet coat of slightly watered down glue, let that dry a tad and then another light coat of glue, leaving it for the night to fully dry. Once the glue is set hopefully two coats of high traffic floor paint will give a good cozy hand feel.

Yeaa, made a comment down below but using 80grit aluminum oxide blasting medium sprinkled onto a coat of slightly watered down glue

funnny enough, my gym has a little ball maze in the central lounge, not quite like this one but the premise is the same.

I figured the ones I had wouldn't be the best long term, I do plan to order a bunch of escape t nuts and was going to swap them out as needed, but for now I was just going to epoxy the ones I have in there.

not too long ago I had refinished a volume I had made for the same gym about 5 years ago and used the glue with 40 grit aluminum oxide which was a little bit too aggressive but not terrible with enough coats of paint. It's holding up well to the abuse so far so going to try a similar finishing method with the new volumes here, the 80 grit aluminum oxide in a make shift salt shaker should give a nice even texture with proper application technique.

The volume I just refinished was previously done with the texture mixed right into the paint and applied onto primer but it wasn't quite adequate as the texture medium has a tendency to clump up. Sprinkling it onto the layer of wet glue seems to give a much better surface consistency without all those clumps and the paint binds well and seems to hold up to the abuse better than the previous attempts.

I've heard the silica sand works well but not exactly sure where I can find it locally. I've seen the aluminum oxide recommended a lot as well and I was able to grab a 5gal bucket of the 80grit from Princess Auto here in Canada.

I used titebond II for the current attempts. Going to try titebond III next for the better water proofing. Paint is Benjamin Moore floor and patio.
