Quick question for my vault hunter boys

so i completed the main story now and got access to mayhem 1 and true vault hunter mode. I activated mayhem 1 on the ship and started the new game with true vault hunter mode.
Now my question : Is mayhem 1 active from the beginning or do I have to get access to the ship again and active mayhem 1 ?
