Before people tear my head off about being negative about other people or something- I'm the captain, lol.
Tl;dr- I'm about to take over as captain in a few weeks & I'm near-illiterate when it comes to soccer strategy. How should I handle this?
~`~
I've found myself as the captain for our league team next season. Our captain who's been with the team since the start is moving up to the over 30s division at the end of the year & has asked me to take over.
Thing is, I'm athletic, but I have like 10% of the soccer experience as most people on our team. I played intramurals recreationally in University 10 years ago & that's it, never watched a full game in my life that I wasn't playing in. Meanwhile, most of my team has been playing & watching soccer religiously since they could walk.
My assumption on why I was picked to captain the team going forward is I'm very dependable as far as showing up to games & am level-headed, often calming disputes between players that get a little hot over someone missing a block or a shot. Our current captain & the rest of the team is well aware of my lack of soccer knowledge in general, so it's not a case of thinking I'm just keeping my mouth shut on strategy because I'm not currently captain.
When it comes to things like, "Hey, the defensive line needs to pinch in a little" or "Their mid-field game is weak, we can win balls there easily, so just kick it out of the back as far as you can".... I'm totally useless. Our current captain always has useful insight during half-time & is making tweaks to our formation during play. I know myself well enough to know I simply cannot do that.
What worries me is that without a clear "lead voice" calling shots, everyone will be running with their own ideas (Defense asking mids to drop back more, forwards saying to carry it farther, etc.) & it will be chaos.
How would you handle this situation? Appoint a "coach" for the actual strategy? I'm cool with just being the guy handling sign-ups, jerseys, game re-scheduling, etc. But part of me feels like without the weight that actually being captain entails, anybody I ask to take over that responsibility will get more push-back from the team.
As you can probably tell... I tend to overthink things. But any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated!
