Hey guys, Iâm new here so maybe Iâm not the only one that wondering this. I am 21 and have been reading since I was 11-12 and have read many books considered by many to be really great works of literature. I started my reading journey when my dad bought me âracing in the rainâ by Garth Stein, I was instantly hooked on reading, I read a lot of fantasy books such as the âFablehavenâ and âFive Kingdomsâ by Brandon Mull and all of the demigod books by Rick Riordan up until I reached my junior year of highschool when my English teacher recommended I read âThe Roadâ by Cormac McCarthy. That was one of the most eye opening books Iâve ever read to this day and started my journey of reading more âadultâ books. I read tons of Stephen King books including âItâ and âThe Shiningâ as well as other critically acclaimed books like âCatcher in the Ryeâ and âLord of the Fliesâ.
Aside from âThe Roadâ and âThe Shiningâ none of these books really appealed to me, I wasnât particularly impressed with any other officers writing styles like I was with Cormac McCarthy and I wasnât drawn in by the imagery like I was by Stephen King in âThe Shiningâ. Since graduating highschool I have been reading a lot of fantasy such as the âThrone of Glassâ series by Sarah J Mass and some sci-fi such as âThe Scytheâ series by Neal Shusterman. These are all books I really enjoyed but when I try to read more âmatureâ books that Iâm recommended such as the âMistbornâ series by Brandon Sanderson, âPiranesiâ by Susanna Clarke, or âProject Hail Maryâ by Andy Weir.
Firstly, is my taste childish or immature? And second, what are some books that may help to develop my taste? My tbr currently consists of âSword of Kaigenâ, âSnowcrashâ, and âLast Argument of Kingsâ and I am just now starting âBlood over Bright Havenâ by M.L. Wang.
Update: Thank you for all the responses and suggestions! I might have worded this in a way that makes it feel like I feel bad for what I read, Iâm not necessarily ashamed or embarrassed or anything about the books I read, thereâs not anyone thatâs said anything to me or anything. Itâs just one of those questions Iâve asked myself a few times.
