What do you think about this type of bookshelf design for a home?
I think it would make a beautiful backdrop for my TikTok videos I make rating books.
We did not build this bookshelf but we got it from another FB wood working group and talked to the couple that made it. Weâre in love with it but see how the lumber is think and might not be as sexy in person as in the pictures.
Ha ha! Thatâs an awesome comment! Kept me reading to figure out how I lost a point! Itâs made is 2x10â pine so stacking two 2â thick ends together will make us loose a lot of space when it all adds up. At the same time the bulkiness and odd shaped boxes add an appeal too it I canât put my finger on but I like it.
I want another color but my husband it wants black. He said it will make the books stand out and not bleed into the background. I donât know though. I bet if I was more creative we could make other colors look good.
We think so too! Itâs made is 2âx10â pine so when the boxes are stacked itâs roughly 4â think on each end. That will make us loose a lot of spanked but the bulkiness is it is also attractive. Hard to put a finger in it.
It will be made of white pine. Weâre not going to use any exotics and hard wood with this. We have a lot of things we want to display too a long with the books so we think it will add to it more. My husband has a lot of cool items from the war and from being a coal miner. I think they would look cool displayed.
We get it! We like it but donât but do! That makes no sense but it is what it is, lol!
Nothing wrong with being different sometimes, lol!
Yeah, it does look cool! Thank you!
Yeah, I think it leaves lots of options to display books in different ways!
All good points! Iâm impressed you read other comments too! The best thing is itâs not too expensive to replace. We want to have the Amish make us something but thatâs after the kids are older.
We like darker things. Idk why. I think because it hides dust better, lol!
Yeah, itâs pretty cool! Canât put a finger on it at times but something about it is neat! I think it makes a cool backdrop too for pictures and videos. We think it is cool to display things on this way too.
All facts! Yeah, we would prefer a hard wood but weâre not sure if we will want to change this out or keep it. Itâs mainly so the kids donât break anything else thatâs expensive. One already broke the main water line below the cut off this year, lol!
We thought about that too because of our kids! Then we thought we would try to start stuffing stuff in them so changed our minds.
Thank you! Weâve not built ours yet! This is what a couple made that weâve talked to. Theyâre our inspiration to make ours! We wanted feedback before we invested time and money.
It does look pretty cool! Thank you for your feedback! I did not know you could post pictures with comments! Interesting!
Thatâs pretty cool of you to say! Thank you!
Heck yeah! I appreciate that feedback!
Thank you! I really appreciate your feedback! It looks so different. Thatâs what we like about it. Traditional would hold more books but we wanted something folks would come over to see and talk about.
Thank you for your feedback! Awesome!
We think the same thing! Thank you for your feedback!
Awesome! Thank you for the feedback!
We will post pictures once we get it all done! Hopefully it turned out great!
Oh they are definitely heavy! A bookshelf should match its person and Iâm a little thick! Jk! Just kidding trying to be funny, lol!
Weâre going to build it on multiple walls lol. We think it will help us display a lot of our stuff on the books.
No, not at all! I think the selves will help hold the second floor up too, lol!
Itâs made of white pine. Weâre not using hardwood or exotics. We wanted something that would be between $300 to $500 and that we could rate out later if we wanted to change directions a few years down the road.
Our basement furniture is rustic farm so I think this fits it. We wanted to work on making furniture that would last with kids vs something made of compressed materials from a store. The white pine furniture is taking hits from kids like a champ! We think the bookshelves will do the same and look good doing it.
Yeah, the roughness adds a little to it. Makes it a little rustic. Goes with the farm style rustic we have in the basement.
Ha ha! I told my husband I want a small library in the basement and I want one wall of bookshelves in our bedroom! When our kids move out I want a bedroom made into a room of books! The question is are all our kids going to move out or not.. We are thinking one will stay lol. Probably mommaâs boy!
I think itâs the unique look and bulkiness of it all that makes it different and beautiful at the same time. Maybe not the best use of space but something about it is cool.
It does not match all of them but it gives me another reason to buy more books to fit those spaces. There is a secret plan to this getting me more books lol!
Iâve read most of mine. Thatâs why we buy boos every two weeks. I review books on TikTok. Iâm nothing special. I just do it because I enjoy it.
It is! It looks so cool! The different size boxes like blow my mind.
Itâs beautiful for sure! Maybe too thick where the 2x10 boxes meet up but something about it is catchy!
We will! 100%! This is really important to me and thatâs why my husband is putting a lot of thought into it.
I think weâre going to go for it! All the feedback weâre getting from here from people we donât know is more concrete that it will be nice vs our own thoughts. If that makes sense.
We did not build this own. We talked to the guy that build it in a FB woodworking group and fell in love with it. My husband is nervous to comment to it just because he wants to make something people will some over and be impressed by. He thinks this will be it but wanted other peoples feed back before we invest money and time into it.
Yeah, I saw I said put a finger in it vs put a finger on it! This dang app will not let you go back and edit it after you hit reply so I had to go with it, lol!
I have so many different series and book styles! The books you put together and they make faces is my favorite! For those that donât want to separate/OCD organize, this could be a problem, lol!
We totally get that! Yes, it is thick.
If we have doors, we will end up stuffing things in to hide them! Oh do you mean clear glass doors? I get that!
We think so too! It looks so cool!
Yeah weâre definitely interested in lighting!
The top floor we have painted wood furniture. Downstairs were bigger fans of stained items. Seems to hide kids dirty finger prints more.
Thatâs awesome! We love puzzles at our house btw!
Awesome!!!! Yeah, I get in some places it looks nice but in other home it would not.
I get that! Our house is chaotic with four kids, lol! It all goes together, lol! Jk!
Exactly!!! Yeah, this is basically the crate idea with large lumber.
We wish you luck on it! Remember it all really boils down to if you like it or not!
Itâs crazy watching her eat peppers! I canât imagine seeing a cat eat a tomato, lol!
Yeah, there is something about it thatâs cool. Hard to put a finger in it sometimes.
Not buying it. Weâre making it. Itâs not costing us that much because weâre using white pine 2x10âs and planning them down ourselves and doing the work. That way if we want to rip them back out in a year or two we can and weâre only out $500 or less of material and time. Plus, it will be able to take abuse from our kids vs store bought things.
Ha ha! Itâs taken a lot of begging on my part to get my husband to do it, lol!
Awesome! Thank you for the feedback!
We wanted to something that can take damage from kids and if it gets too messed up we could burn it and move on. Our furniture in the basement is a farm rustic homemade type. It looks better than you might be picturing in your head. He uses bench top jointer etc to clean up the edges. All stuff idk. I just sit there and look pretty and hold things lol.
Iâm weâve not thought about light grey before!
All good points btw! I donât want you to think Iâm arguing! Weâve been tearing it up and down trying to decide to commit to it. We like the different size boxes because we have different size books and stuff to display. Itâs made of white pine so if we rip it out in two years we will not loose more than $500.
I appreciate the feedback! I forgot to add it to the original discussion but I did a few times in comments. Itâs made of 2âx10â white pine so itâs not to expensive and not a issue to replace at a later date if we want too. We have kids and the pine seems to take abuse better than compressed shelves from stores. It matches our rustic farm look in the basement.
These pictures are from someone we talked to in a wood working FB group. They got their inspiration from someone else and were getting ours from them.
We definitely want a darker stain. Our walls are blue and it would match the loose we have going on. Weâve considered painting it white and staining the trim. Not 100% sold on either option yet. Leaning more to all stain though.
It is thick. There is a unique look from it and because itâs not refined we find something attractive about it. Weâre debating with ours running it through our bench planner first to make the edges cleaner. Donât know if it will take away from the rustic look yet or not. Weâre going to make two models of each way to see.
Itâs definitely unique! Thank you!
Yeah, Pinterest is where the couple we got this from saw it first. They made this at their house and we fell in love with it too. Well we go back and forth about things. It makes more sense to have traditional bookshelves but these are great to display things on and it looks rugged/rustic. For our finished basement it would look great and match the already dented furniture from young children, lol!
Thank you! I really appreciate hearing that!
Ha ha! Well, we keep having kids so no one is moving in anytime soon, lol! Weâre waiting for one to move out so we can turn their room into a library, lol!
We wish we understood lighting! I know itâs probably so simple to most people but we donât feel confident it anything we pick. My husband wants our bottom floor to have more colored lighting but we just suck at it lol. I agree though. The right lighting will look amazing!
Sounds beautiful! Yeah, the Army moved us here before he retired. We wanted to go to Montana. The Army said yes on a Friday and Monday morning we had orders to Indiana, lol!
We totally get it! Thatâs why itâs been hard to say yes to it! We would have more room with traditional shelfâs but with these we can display things if different sizes better. Itâs something different that could be something to talk about when guest come over. If we donât like it, we can always rip it out and burn it, lol.
I love having hot chocolate, a blanket, and a good book! Itâs my favorite thing since we moved to Indiana from Texas. I love the snow as long as Iâm inside and my husband gets the firewood, lol.
Once they are nailed down I donât think we will adjust them really. I get what youâre saying though and I agree!
Yeah the books change the entire dynamic of it!
Thatâs for sure! We would have to burn it in sections, lol!
You have to plan it all out of you could have gaps and you donât want that to happen.
Yeah we definitely run test before we stain, paint, sand, etc. Totally get what youâre saying!
My husband said if it looks too bad, 2x10â white pine is not that expensive so we could throw it out and burn it later on and he will not cry as much about it, lol. I think itâs worth a shot to try.
We like how it makes it stand out! This is not our house though. Itâs the couples house that help give us the idea from something they seen previously. Our house had blue walls.
I totally get that. Itâs not as clean as most custom made bookshelves but we like the unique look of it. We want something that a guest would stop and say, thatâs different and I like it. Something to talk about and finally be cool for once in our life, lol!
We have wood paneling wall that are painted blue in our finished basement. Not our choice but how we bought the house. We like the blue but not the panels. He thinks mounting a black flat panel on bookshelfâs like in the picture will help hide the ones that make up the wall and make it have a smoother look.
It really is isnât it! Very eye catching.
Those books and the bookshelf belong to a couple we talked to in a FB woodworking group. We loved their idea that they got from somewhere else. We posted here to get feedback from people we donât know to see if we build it would it be a conversation peace or look too simple. I have over 300 books so we need bookshelfâs, lol! We just wanted feedback before we invest money and time.
I think the difference size squares make it really cool to look at!
