Itâs pretty common for people to react negatively if you criticize a food that they love. But with vegetables, there seems to be this extra layer of defensiveness if you dislike them.
Sometimes people will dismiss a negative opinion of vegetables by saying things like, âYou can't just eat chicken tendies,â âYouâll like it when youâre older,â or âIf you don't get your blood sugar down you'll die.â I once saw a comment that said something like, âAnyone who doesnât eat five servings of vegetables a day will die young.â
These types of comments imply that if you didnât like it, then the problem must be you. You are the one who doesnât understand it. You are the one who needs to change in order to have a positive experience with vegetables. Itâs as if they have trouble conceiving of the possibility that some eaters may have legitimate reasons for not liking vegetables.
