Their early work, like the Epic of Gilgamesh, was some really revolutionary and powerful stuff, but ever since then they've become derivative and boring. It's clear that once they tasted success that the call to sell out was too great to resist. The Iliad and The Odyssey, for example, have weak worldbuilding (like who are all these gods - why isn't their origin explained) and clearly panders to the popular, mass audience of the time. And then they have the gall to release the Aeneid shortly afterwards? I mean come on, are they even trying? It's only gotten worse since then.
I know a lot of literature fanboys will probably downvote this, but that doesn't make me wrong. The truth hurts. Luckily, newer underrated gems like Video Games are bringing some fresh ideas and perspectives to entertainment. So there's some hope for the future.
