Why don't I feel anything when I read books as opposed to video games?
Post Body

Hello,

This is something that has been on my mind a while. Basically, I want to immerse myself into literature in a manner that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally moving. I seem to get the intellectual part but almost never the emotional draw. As such, reading often feels more like a taxing effort than an enjoyable pastime or hobby. I seem to get both whenever I play certain video games but almost never for books, and then not to the same extent.

Right now, for instance, I'm playing through Life is Strange while also reading On the Road by Kerouac. While I love the book itself at an intellectual and aesthetic level, and, as a writer myself, would love to adapt some of what I'm reading, I never seem to feel as strongly as I do compared to when I play the game. In fact, LiS's continual reference to Kerouac is probably a part of the reason why the book is impactful at all right now--and that would be because the game certainly made me feel.

I don't know. Is this normal? Is it just a matter of reading more until I get used to it or is there something else at play?

Thanks.
