We could all use some cheering up these days, and what is a better way than getting more books? I'd love to hear from you all about what books made you laugh. As for me, the funniest book I ever read would probably be Catch-22. The book is filled to the brim with gallows humor and it is hard to pick my favorite scene as I love so many parts of the book.
[Spoiler Ahead]
One of the most memorable funny scenes for me came in chapter 18. Yossarian, a WW2 soldier evading his duties, finds himself in a hospital where he fakes his illness to stay out of combat as long as possible. In the meantime, another solider dies before his parents can get to him to say their goodbyes. To let Yossarian stay in the hospital for some time, the doctors strike a deal with him. He must sit in place of the dead solider so his family can say goodbye to him instead, because "one dying boy is just as good as any other".
This all sets up a hilarious scene with the family crying over their boy "Giuseppe" while the soldier keeps correcting them that his name is Yossarian. The father is perplexed; he expresses that he knew his son so long but never knew that his name was Yossarian. By the end, they accept that his name is Yossarian and advise him not to let others mistreat him in heaven, even though he is Italian.
