What to look for at a library?

As a kid I used to love the library, I would take my card and leave with as many books as they would let me. I want to recreate my old love of reading and I'm pretty confident the library is a good place to do that!
However, I have a question. When y'all are at a library or book store what exactly are you looking for? What are your techniques on finding the right book? I am worried that when I arrive at the library I will be overwhelmed by the choice!
