After reading this thread in another discussion I wanted to try out The Ballad of Black Tom. It got a lot of praise on here recently and after burning through it in two sittings (it's not long) I wanted to discuss it.
I love the idea. I love the subversion of Lovecraft's racist overtones and such. Those things are fantastic to me.
I really, however, found it hard to read at times. The sentence structure is very basic, the characters outside of the main protagonist don't grow or move much, and in the end it winds up being a good idea that I found middling to read.
I was curious on everyone's thoughts on this. I think it reads like a student experimenting and on that level I loved it, as well as in concept, but it was odd to me that it gets the praise it does.
Either way I think it's worth a read for fans of Lovecraftian fiction or weird fiction. Really solid plot and pacing even if the writing is iffy. Check it out and I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this book.
