So I got the Dresden Files in my head, probably seeing Jim Butcher's name around Reddit recently. I think, these books sound decent, probably great summer reading. I'm into the genre, should be no problem.
I go to Amazon, "read inside this book," and within the first few paragraphs the protagonist says,
My office is in a building in midtown Chicago.
I lived in Chicago over ten years. I couldn't tell you where "midtown" Chicago supposedly is. Right in that moment I was kicked out of the story. It seems like it's supposed to be fantasy (wizard) set in reality (Chicago), but the author obviously knows very little about chicago, and having his first-person narrator not even know about the town he lives in, well, that was that for me.
Midtown Chicago? Double-you-tee-eff, mate. You lost me, Butcher.
