Quite a few people recommended this book to me, and I can’t understand the hype.
The characters are so poorly drawn and unbelievable. She can’t write male relationships and all the dialogue rings false.
100 pages in, I can kinda see where this all going. It all just feels contrived and sentimental, there’s no real tragic vision of the human condition that would make me feel concerned.
It all feels so self-conscious. I can’t really stand anymore romanticisation of these faux-bohemian middle class New Yorkers huffing on the fumes of their own cultural capital.
If you do decide to read it please look at the trigger warnings. I really liked the book until I was slammed with every single trigger you could think of. I don’t regret reading the book but I wish I were more prepared
I was absolutely loving this book until the Caleb storyline came up. I was beyond pissed and disappointed in what the author decided to take the book.
Caleb’s storyline was so unnecessary are triggering. Why did Jude need a relationship (a horrible one at that) before Willem? He was already traumatized by everything Brother Luke did and all of that would’ve been reason for Jude to not want to have sex anymore.
Also if Caleb wasn’t in the story, the author could’ve explored Jude and Willem’s relationship more. And even better, explored malcom and JB more! Just like the back cover described.

I hated that so much. I wanted to hear more about JB and Malcom. But all we got were the trauma Olympics
