In second place for October's horror pick is the novella Coraline by Neil Gaiman. u/badwolf691 nominated it and then suggested that we read it in addition to the winner, Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterica. And, because r/bookclub is so awesome, that's what we're going to do!
*Note that there is also a graphic novel adaptation by illustrator P. Craig Russell. That's not what is on the schedule, but I am going to check it out as well. The movie version is nice and creepy too.
Goodreads Summary:
There is something strange about Coraline's new home. It's not the mist, or the cat that always seems to be watching her, nor the signs of danger that Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, her new neighbours, read in the tea leaves. It's the other house - the one behind the old door in the drawing room. Another mother and father with black-button eyes and papery skin are waiting for Coraline to join them there. And they want her to stay with them. Forever. She knows that if she ventures through that door, she may never come back.
Discussion Schedule:
This book is just 162 pages in my edition, so we will split it into to two sections. The last check-in will be on Halloween (yay!) for a spooky treat:
- Monday Oct. 24: Chapters I to VI
- Monday Oct. 31: Chapter VII to end
As you read, I suggest you make a note of any passages that you especially like. Drop a Post-It, an extra bookmark, highlight with your Kindle--whatever works for you. We're going to try something a little different in the discussions of this book and you'll want to refer back to your favorite bits.
