How can I keep thin paper from wrinkling?

I found a really cute wrapping paper that I would like to use for covers on a few journals Iām wanting to make I did a test on my board with stick glue and liquid glue and put them under a few books and the paper wrinkled and buckled. I have tried putting the wrapping paper onto a thicker card stock using both methods again but Iām still getting the same results.
Do you all think that a spray adhesive would be my best bet or is this idea a lost cause? Thanks!
