I am in the process of acquiring some secondhand custom leatherbound RPG books, and they are in great condition except for some significant wear on the foil titles on one of the spines, to the point where you can hardly read them. I inquired with two restoration & binding services I found online, who both basically said "it's not worth the effort to just fix the foiling, it's better to just rebind it." But there's nothing wrong with the bindings at all, it's just the foil. Plus if I were to rebuild just one they wouldn't match because the leather and level of wear would be different, and from the quotes I got the minimum cost of rebinding would cost more than I'm paying per book, so it kind of negates the deal Iām buying them for in the first place.
I'm pretty new to bookbinding, does anyone more experienced have any experience with something like this?
