I imagine I'll be down voted, probably ignored. To clarify I'm a huge Bon Iver fan, Sean and Justin's solo stuff, Volcano Choir, Gayngs, etc. The latest Big Red Machine album falls massively flat for me. A bowl of fries with no sauce and no Seasoning. After a few listens of the entire album I can say I could happily not listen to it ever again. Justin does show some good vocal range, the majority of the vocal performances though are entirely forgettable and a few just totally feel off with the music. A few songs tend to just merge into one cauldron of bland material that I'm surprised was ever considered to be put on an album. I am well aware this is BRM and not B.I but I enjoyed their previous album and am also entitled to think this one is shit. I'm not sure if I'm missing the point, it contains the distorted, electronic sounds of BRM, and the scaled back grandiose of some of the last album. But it never comes together to make anything of substance. In I,I Bon Iver creates almost sub sections of songs, mixing melodies and sounds, most to an extent where you feel the best parts of are song are abrupt, or they are underused. I feel like this album also scales back in alot of ways, maybe trying to be too clever. I'm sure many disagree and wouldn't mind being advised otherwise, but I cant get passed the solemn waste of time this album is. It doesn't conjure any feelings of happiness, sadness, inward thought, just songs that sound like knock off Taylor Swift songs in Dollarama.
