Rough Draft for Czechoslovak Army List - Feedback Welcome and Appreciated!
Post Body

A little while back I put together a Swiss Army List which I think turned out pretty well! But originally the project had been to do a Czechoslovak one, which I set aside because sources were so damn sparse for good information on squad level organization. But I had quite a lot of notes all the same, and after /u/leading-ad-3634 posted last week asking if such a thing existed, I decided I ought to get those notes organized, do one final push on research options, and at least see what I could put together. A big thanks to leading-ad both for the kick in the butt to get back on this, and also their input/sounding off as I tweaked things and brainstormed.

This is still very much a work in progress for which I'm looking for initial feedback on, whether for balance, composition, or otherwise. Sources on the Czechoslovak forces c. 1938, in English at least, are somewhat sparse, and what does exist is almost always looking higher than the squad level, so for some units composition is guesswork at best. Any Czechs out there who have sources available in Czech, your input is welcome most of all. I've added annotations at points to go over the thought process, or note specific points where feedback would be most useful.. Some units are not completely sketched out, usually because they are generic and identical to what other armies have or because it is the same as regular infantry so why keep repeating it here, but a few I have a sense of what they are, but need to nail down the specific of their mechanics.

So without further ado, here is where things stand.

HQ

Officers, Medic, Forward Observer, Chaplain all exist as normal and for normal points.

INFANTRY

Regular Infantry Squad
1 NCO 4 men for 50 pts Regular, w rifles. Add up to 8 more.
One soldier may have an LMG and a pistol for 20 pts, another man becomes the loader. [Pistol for gunner conforms to TO&E. Don't want to copy Slovak rule, so seems a nice way to give a similar small boost]
Up to two soldiers may be given rifle grenade launchers for pts [TO&E has to grenadiers. Some online debate whether they still had grenade launchers in 1938 though... Adds flavor though either way]
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model

Border Troops (Hraničaská pechota) [Border Troops I'm assuming same options as Regular Infantry, but they were army elite, so Vets)
1 NCO 4 men for 65 pts Vets, w rifles. Add up to 8 more.

Motorized Infantry (Motomechanisovana) / (Rychlá Divize) [Czsk Army had motorized units, but in limited numbers. Same options as Regular infantry aside from Motor rule, plus set max number to transport truck]
1 NCO 4 men for 50 pts Regular, w rifles. Add up to 7 more.
Motorized Infantry (May reroll any failed order test that is required to mount or dismount a transport vehicle)

Mountain Infantry (Horská pechota) [Seems probable smaller unit size? Or just leave same? Same options though as reg infantry]
1 NCO 4 men for 50 pts Regular or Veteran at 65pts
Add up to X more men with rifles
Skis OR Mountain Warriors for 1 pts each

Naval Shore Party (Danube Flotilla Sailors from the Motorboat Detachments - Treating as disorganized inexperienced infantry for cannon fodder)
1 NCO and 4 men for 35 pts.
Add up to 5 additional men with rifles for 7 each.
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model
[Should they have Stubborn like many Marines do?]

Dragoons [One source implied they used French organization, but Slovak goes to 8 in the Slovak army book, which many be easiest to follow]
1 NCO 5 men for 72 pts Regular
Add up to ? more men with rifles for 12 pts each
One soldier may have an LMG for 20 pts, another man becomes the loader.
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model
Light recon was intended role as per doctrine. Dragoons special rule so no charging?

Motorcycle Infantry [No guidance on this in any source I found… just copying Slovak organization…]
Regular Infantry Squad
1 NCO 3 men for 60 pts Regular, on Motorcycles and Sidecars
Up to 4 more with rifles at 15 pts each
Up to one LMG at 20 pts
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model

Cyclists (Cyclistické jednotky) [Again, kept them identical to regular infantry except they have bikes]
1 NCO 4 men for 55 pts Regular, on Bicycles, w rifles. Add up to 8 more.

Fortification Troops (Skupiny) [Considered low quality, but assuming standard troops. Basic Inexp. option. Did not give them grenade launchers though. Figured would be more reliant on fortification-based support weapons]
1 NCO 4 men for 35 pts Inexperienced
Add up to 8 more men with rifles for 7 pts each
One soldier may have an LMG and a pistol for 20 pts, another man becomes the loader.
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model

Reservists [Czsk were reliant on reservists to augment their force. Czech reservists were considered reliable, but not always other groups... Something like 50% of German reservists didn't show up during the September mobilization. Rules reflect this]
1 NCO 4 men for 35 pts Inexperienced
Add up to 8 more men with rifles for 7 pts each
One soldier may have an LMG and a pistol for 20 pts, another man becomes the loader.
Up to two soldiers may be given rifle grenade launchers
Anti-tank grenades for 2 pts per model
There are intended to be three options. I'm unsure whether you should be able to choose and pay (or deduct) points for each option, or if it should be randomized with a d6 at the start, and you find out what shows up. Options would be though:
Czech Reservists are Green (i.e. Eager but untested, out to defend their homeland)
German Reservists are Shirkers (i.e. reflecting their lack of turning up)
Slovak Reservists Start With D2 Pins (Reflecting uncertain levels of morale and playing second fiddle to the Czechs)

National Rifle Guards (A semi-official gendarmarie / paramilitary made up of varied groups, but many civilians. Somewhat disorganized and poorly armed)
1 NCO 4 men Inexperienced, with a 'hodgepodge of rifles'
Up to 15 more can be added
“A Hodgepodge of Rifles: Armed with cast-offs of the army, even including single shot rifles, after completing a successful Fire or Advance order, the unit must pass an additional order test. If they fail, they take one additional pin” Intended to reflect the reloading process
“Mixed numbers: For purpose of order tests, the starting number is always considered their full strength number” Intended to reflect that the precise number for their squad seems to have fluctuated over time
Bikes and horses are allowed for upgrade. Horses would have dragoon rule (no charge). Many units were mounted thus.

State Defense Guards (Stráž obrany státu - Gendarmerie to supplement the army border guards)
1 NCO 4 men for 35 pts Inexperienced with rifles pistols (extra point because pistols?)
Add seven men fully armed for normal points. Add an additional three with only pistols for discount. [During May Mobilization many "arrived at the border on May 21 without weapons, because rifles had not yet been assigned to them” ]
16 max unit size
One LMG (TO&E would seem to indicate two, but rarely were they to strength)
Green (?) to reflect the very mixed group from which they were drawn, which would include some soldiers, but also some police.

Castle Guards (Hradní stráž) [The Castle guard carried only pistols on official duties. As such they start this way here, but can be upgraded to rifles. Can't find any information on squad organization...]
1 4 Vets Armed with pistols
5 more men allowed? No idea what their squad size would be...
Add rifles for points

Engineers (Just follow Slovak rule for size? Can't find any info on Czsk organization)
Vets
1 NCO 5 men with rifles
Up to… 7 more? (Feels large)
AT grenades
Demo charges Upgrade
Engineers Special Rule

A note on SMGs/pistols: I've added a few options which are heavy on the pistols, and NO SMG options... the Czsks did create an SMG in the 1930s, the ZK383, but there is precious little information on how many were ever handed out, just that it was a small number. Doctrinally, also, the SMG was not seen the same way as other armies, but essentially as a lighter LMG, even having a bipod. As such, baring positive proof of distribution, I've almost entirely ignored them. I have considered making the SMG an option alternative to the LMG though given the above, and thoughts on that are welcome.

Infantry Teams

Med Mortar, MMG Team, HMG Team, AT Rifle all exist as normal.
Need to confirm if snipers existed under TO&E/doctrine. Otherwise will use Polish Marksman entry.
No confirmation of flamethrowers, so not included

Artillery

AT Guns

Light Anti-tank: Normal (vz. 34 3.7cm)
Medium AT: Normal 4.7 cm KPÚV vz. 38
Heavy AT: Fixed with Flak capabilities. 7.5 cm kanon PL vz. 37 or 8 cm kanon PL vz. 37

Howitzers

Light Howitzer: Normal (With shield) (7.5 cm horsky kanon vz.15)
Light Howitzer with AA Capabilities: (with shield) (8cm kanon vz 28 most were converted to vz 30 but seems not all were) (Transition allowed it to rotate but was a process. Takes a pin if used for Flak maybe?)
Medium Howitzer: Normal (With shield) (10.5 cm kanon vz.35, or 10 cm húfnica vz.14/19 vz.16/19 vz.14/19 & vz.16/19)
Medium Howitzer with AA Capabilities?? (with shield) (10 cm lahka húfnica vz.30)

LT vz. 35 (Same as Panzer 35(t) - 8 armor with light AT co-axial MMG and 1 hull-mounted MMG . 8 - 25 mm armor.
LT vz. 38 (Not production, not a standard selector option) (Same as Panzer 38(t) - 8 armor with light AT co-axial MMG and 1 hull-mounted MMG . 8 - 30 mm armor.
LT vz 39 (Not production, not a standard selector option) (8 armor with medium AT co-axial MMG and 1 hull-mounted MMG. 12 - 32 mm armor.

TRUCKS

Tatra 57A/Praga Baby/Jawa Minor etc. - Four seat car
Praga AV/Tatra 26/30 - Six seater
Tatra 82 - Six seater with light tow capacity
Tatra 92/Praga RV ~12 men capacity light tow capacity
Praga RN/Skoda L/Tatra 27 ~18 men. Tow capabilities unclear?
Skoda 6 ST 6-L or Tatra 85 - 30 men 6 ton tow capacity (All except super-heavy AT?)

TOWS

Tow capabilities are taken from the stated tow weight compared to the stated weights of the gun types in the Czsk armory, with some added weight to account for ammo limber.

Skoda Z - Wheeled. Can tow anything. [13 km/hr Slow?]
Praga III - Tracked “towing guns up to 1,800 kg” (light only?) [10 km/hr Slow?]
Škoda MTH - Tracked, open-topped, no armor. “Towed 2.5 tons” (Medium AT/AA or light guns?) [10-13 km/hr speed Slow? ]
Praga IV - Tracked ”towing up to 4.5 tons.” (Up to medium guns and medium AT/AA?) [21 km/hr.]
Horsies: Normal

Army Special Rules

The special rules were made up specifically to reflect the circumstances of Czechoslovakia going to war in the fall of 1938. They would mostly work for Spring, 1939 as well. The assumption is a minimal change to the timeline, where Munich still happens but the Czcks decide to fight alone anyways and to their best. They would still make reasonable sense for a war where the Western Allies stand-pat as well and don't allow the country to be sliced up at Munich, since while perhaps not entirely on their own, Czechoslovakia's allies would nevertheless have been far away, and not immediately able to turn the tide, even if the promise of considerable assistance was on the horizon to hold out for.

Even the Kitchen Sink

The Czechoslovaks would be needing everything at their disposal to push back against the German onslaught, and even the most untested of weapons must be thrown into the fight. Although not delivered to the Army prior to the German invasion of March, 1939, both the vz. 38 and vz. 39 tanks had several prototypes which could, conceivably, have been pressed into emergency service. As such, the Czechoslovaks may take a vz. 38 or vz. 39 tank as part of their deployment, which does not count against the tank slot in the selector being used.

  • Vz. 38 is 8 armor, with turret mounted Light AT w/ co-axial MMG and 1 hull-mounted MMG. It is Inexperienced, and it is Unreliable.
  • Vz. 39 is 8 armor, with turret mounted Medium AT w/ co-axial MMG and 1 hull-mounted MMG. It is Inexperienced, Unreliable, and Experimental.

All On Their Own

Abandoned by the British and French at Munich, the Czechoslovaks were all too aware that help was not going to be forthcoming. Nevertheless, the professional core of the Czechoslovak Army was a well drilled force, and many men would have given their all to stop the German Blitzkrieg. Any Infantry unit which is Regular or Veteran may be given the Stubborn rule at 1 pt per model to represent the dogged determination many Czechoslovak soldiers would have brought to the fight. [Limit to Full Strength Units? Or is Stubborn specific enough to not make this OP]

Disorder Within

While the Czechs made up the bulk of the army, and were considered reliable defenders of the country should the worst happen, the unfortunate truth was that the same could not always be said for others. The Slovaks often resented feeling like second-fiddle to their Czech counterparts who always seemed to be favored for promotions and the best postings, while Sudetan Germans in the reserves failed to turn up at an alarming rate during the September mobilization of 1938, many of their number showing little interest to defend the First Republic against Nazi Germany. As such, a Czechoslovak force must include at least one Reservist Infantry [with either the Slovak or Sudetan German option if end up deciding it as points not random], as part of their selection, for the normal points cost of the unit.

So that is where the project stands as of now. Some of it I think is looking good, some still feels a bit like I winged it (because I did). Feedback is a big part of finishing this and getting it into a presentable form though, so please don't hold back on it (and if you have any sources which go into squad level organization beyond the 'standard' infantry squad, please do share. I feel like I have gone through just about every book out there in English that google says exists... but surely there must be something I'm missing!)
