Today was out on the water on a bass boat with a person sitting in front on a raised chair and was going past another boats wake. When i was crossing the wake the boat violently tipped and swerved to each side(i was also trying to correct it so not sure if this influenced it) but the person in front even almost fell off and we probably nearly capsized but i just fully let of throttle and the boat came down and everything was fine.
I’ve had a little experience in boating but not a lot and i was going a bit fast but was also trying to adjust the trim so i didn’t porpoise up and down so was trimmed pretty high. The boat is a bit tilted to one side even just going normally but i don’t think this mattered much and the water was quite low causing me to be quite close to the shore so i couldn’t take on the wake at the proper angle so i kind of glided into it straight in between each wave causing it to tip to the side where it just carried on recoiling to each side and severely tipping the boat.
Does anyone know how i could’ve prevented this or should i just slow down at a wake and attack it at a proper angle if possible with a lower trim or has this happened to anyone else?
For starters, never let somebody ride up front when on plane. Especially in something as low sided as a bass boat. Next if you couldn’t take them at 90° towards port, aim for 45°. Or you should’ve turned starboard and hit them at 90° or 45°. Also you should’ve trimmed up to lift the bow more. Finally it sounds like you over corrected for the swaying of the boat. Sounds dumb, but you just have to go with the motion of the ocean in cases like this sometimes.
I fish tournaments occasionally with shotgun starts (everybody leaves from the launch at the same time). It can be nerve racking when you’re not able to turn to hit a wake at something other than what you experienced. But it’ll teach you the ultimate in throttle, trim, and boat control.
