My boat is recommended for 10-30hp. That is recommended, not a law. A 30hp 4 stroke is heavier than a 50hp 2 stroke. Does that mean I can put a 2 stroke 50hp on it without risking any damage to the boat?

Close! It’s actually dependent on a few things. There’s a formula that gives you max hp per the US coast guard. It’s a function of the length x beam width which gives you a factor. Then you multiply that factor by 2 minus 90 if it’s a console steer. Tillers get a bit more complicated depending on if it’s a soft chine (factor x 0.8)-25 or hard chine boat (factor x 0.8)-15.
