Iām thinking about getting a hydraulic jack plate on my bass boat, itās a ranger 520vx with a 225hp. So itās 20ā10ā boat. Right now, I get it to about 65-70 depending on different factors. The reason I add where Iām from is pretty much all the water around me that I fish is deep. Itās not like Iām in Florida zipping around random rivers and swamps where the deepest point is 6ā and randomly goes to 1ā or something. With that being said, how exactly would a hydraulic jack plate benefit me vs what I have now and compared to a manual jack plate? Do I really need to be able to raise the motor like that if Iām always in deep enough water where I donāt have to worry about hitting ground? Would it make me faster? Handle rough water better? Whatās the benefit?
There have been a few times Iāve had to drive in real shallow water, I did actually hit the ground earlier this year. But thatās only because the rowing competitions made me go around the outside. Iāve since learned when those competitions are and avoid going to those places those days so itās never been an issue since. Outside of that Iāve never once hit the ground on any of my boats. So is there a benefit?
So Iām not sure if they make a manual jack plate for that large of a motor. You are probably thinking of a setback plate which is stationary. You might pick up some speed from either one. The main benefit of the hydraulic plate is the ability to raise the motor on the fly. Which will increase your speed as less motor in the water=less drag. But youāll need a low water pick up on your motor to avoid overheating.
Unless you have the desire to go faster and donāt care about money, youāll likely see some benefits from installing one. But since you arenāt fishing super shallow, thereās only the benefit of additional speed for you.
