We generally build our boats as part of a program. For some reason, we need to train them in traditional rowing. Starting to neck down on reasonably fast, fairly seaworthy vessels that will handle either a solo rower or a rower and lookout in the rear. Our folks look to be about 160 lbs at the least, and perhaps 250 at the heavy end.
We also sail.
For rowing, I keep coming back to the MSD Skiff, which may work with some relatively inexpensive 1/4" ply for prototyping. Duckworks - MSD Rowing Skiff (duckworksmagazine.com) Wide middle seat, a couple of oarlock locations. It's long enough. We normally make a 12' wider boat, but it's got to be slow, just looking at them.
For combination row sail, the Goat Island Skiff (as recommended here earlier). Goat Island Skiff Boat Plan, Beautiful, Fast, LIght - Storer Boat Plans in Wood and Plywood I don't believe I can get one of these together nearly as quickly, 5 foot beam troubles me for the rowing end. Perhaps a bit of a stretch for traditional rowing, but I don't know. Haven't rowed a boat that wide.
Any other suggestions of boats that would come together fairly easily for rowing or mixed rowing sailing?
Looking ahead, a longer boat for two rowers seems a logical addition.
