Hello, I'm u/LegendaryContests, and I am a Kickstarter content creator. As you all know, Kickstarter is a platform where you publish flashy campaigns and then people give you money based on how much they like your campaign. You create arbitrary tiers so people can give you more money. It's a place where you show of your graphic design and marketing skills. I like to think of it as a kind of interactive performance art. Sometimes I'll post updates and weave a tale of supply chain slowdowns and interruptions in material resourcing. These phrases don't actually mean anything, of course. Sometimes we'll even send a memo to the original backers explaining that we've run out of money and they need to send us more, and they do.
To be totally honest with you, I have kind of wondered who these people are who give us money. Don't get me wrong, our campaigns are top quality and I think we deserve every penny we get. But who are these people that have so much money to throw at high quality (dare I say, cinematic) presentations? Part of me wonders if Kickstarter is some kind of money laundering front. It would make a lot of sense, but that's not really my concern. It gives me a space to express myself creatively without any obligation to follow through on these business plans my friends and I make up together.
However, recently this one backer is harassing us to send him something, and frankly I'm quite confused as to what's going on. They're claiming they are "owed" something for the money they gave us. They're expecting us to produce some kind of physical product and mail it to them. But products are for people who don't have presentations.
At first we assumed they just wanted to engage with us some more and give us more money. So we stayed in character in our interactions over e-mail, and we explained that there had been unexpected delays and that he should give us more money. We've had similar conversations many times before, but this individual seem to get quite upset with us about this! He suggested that the hundreds of dollars he had already paid us was "enough" and he had waited long enough for his game?
To make matters worse, now he's asking for a refund. We told him we put him in a "queue" to buy ourselves some time, but what does that even mean? Is he asking for his money back? Is he somehow not satisfied with the campaign we put out? He insists he's a "Kickstarter veteran", which means he should know how this system works. We're kind of at our wit's end about how to deal with this situation.
If anyone can shed some light on this, we would really appreciate it.
Yours truly,
LegendaryContests
