I was browsing the top 100 and noticed something kind of odd.
Gaia Project is ranked #34 with an average rating of 8.76 over 2,847 votes and a Geek Rating of 7.784, while Kingdom Death is #35 with an average rating o 8.96 over 4,217 votes and a Geek Rating of 7.783.
I know the exact algorithm is a secret, but I always assumed it was based around average rating and total votes. I hadn't really seen something like this before, where a game ends up with a lower geek rating despite having more votes and a higher vote average.
There is obviously some other factors at play. The only thing I could think of was that maybe the fact that Gaia Project got these votes in a shorter time window (since it's newer) plays a role. Maybe there is some sort of natural decay to scores that they factor in.
This isn't meant to be a discussion about these two games in particular, or any particular game's worthiness at a certain position, but what are your thoughts on how BGG calculates its Geek Score rating? Have you seen any weird ratings that left you scratching you heard?
