Mage Knight: Questions

Ok so, I just picked up mage knight, the Krang expansion and the lost legion one. My questions are: How do you suggest we learn to play the game? A few solo ones? Or just jump in with a bunch of people.
We don't want to add way more complexity to the game, what parts of the lost legion do you recommend we use or not use until we know the base game?
WHY ARE THE RULES SO TINY!!!
