Right now, we play all of our games on our dinner table, which is something like 2 feet by 3 feet. Depending on the components, this can be fine--games that are primarily just piles of cards or have a smaller board fit okay on it. But for games that have individual player boards, or even just a lot of components, we quickly run out of space beyond two players. (For instance, 2p Terra Mystica more or less completely maxes out the available space, and Puerto Rico was pushing it.)
While it might be fun long-term to get or build one of those bigger tables with the recessed gaming area, that's not practical right now. Are there any good table toppers that you can put on an existing table to extend the play area? I was looking at something like this poker table top, but I wonder if the cup holders and card slots would be obnoxious rather than helpful.
