Tips For Color Correction For a Newbie
Post Body

I am new to color correction and need a little bit of help getting started. The camera I'm using is an OG BMPCC, and I would prefer to use film mode. I will be doing all editing and color correction/grading in DaVinci Resolve. I may also need to match a second camera that will shoot in RGB.

Would the following be a good way to get started?

  • Create three nodes
  • Put a color space transform on the first node with the following settings: input color space and gamma BMD Film; output color space and gamma REC709
  • Adjust things like exposure, contrast and saturation on the second node
  • On the third node, use the color checker feature to match my color checker (Datacolor Spyder24)
  • If I need to match a second camera, on the color space transform, would I make the input color space & gamma RGB, and the output color space & gamma BMD Film?

Is this a good way to correct the footage, and would this give me a relatively normal looking image? I'm not looking to do any sort of creative grading at the moment; I just want to achieve good looking footage. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
