Yes....I know, I know. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras are.....well, cinema cameras. It's right there in the name. However, that being said, their form factor, ease of use, and all around freaking phenomenal image quality would also seem to lend the BMPCC's to 1 person run & gun shoots (like events, real estate, weddings...) where having the time and additional personnel to dedicate to focus is impractical. Now that gyro stabilization has been unlocked for the BMPCC's, the only thing holding it back for this type of use seems to be lack of continuous autofocus.
With LIDAR autofocus starting to become available as an add-on feature for cameras, I wonder if there would be a use case for Blackmagic Design to develop a LIDAR autofocus module that would fit on top of the BMPCC? It could communicate to the camera via Bluetooth. This is already proven to work, as at least two companies have offered exactly this as an aftermarket solution for the BMPCC (although sadly, neither one makes the module anymore).
Am I mistaken in thinking that something like this would make the BMPCC's more useable for run & gun type filmmaking? It seems to me that it would open up the BMPCC to people who are not necessarily using it strictly as a cinema camera...which I would think mean more potential sales. Those who don't want or need it, don't have to buy it, and it's not on their cameras. Is my thinking sound?
